Not that I'm good with food etc (usually a hazard to health when I venture into the kitchen) but how about a milk-rich porridge??

Firstly, you can freeze it -just put the carton in the freezer, but secondly if it doesn't smell or taste off then it is NOT off. You need to educate your OH about waste ;) .Throwing away a perfectly good food for no reason is just not on in my book :naughty: I really think use by dates are the enemy of good home economics.

Even if it were off it won't do you any harm. I use sour milk for scones, muffins soda bread etc and if I can't use it up before it is really bad I freeze it in tubs marked 'sour milk for baking'. In my experience milk from the supermarket doesn't seem to go off which is why I buy real milk from the farm shop. It has cream on the top and will start to turn after a few days which I think is a good sign;) Never eat food that is incapable of rotting say I:D

Another thought, pour it into a jug and chuck the carton. Tell him it goes out of date on Sunday.

    What magic milk is this?

If you leave some in the fridge and go away on holiday for a couple of weeks I can assure that supermarket milk WILL have gone off

    Hi Little_Belle,

There's an earlier thread with lots more ideas on using the milk up so I've added your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.

For help with freezing milk have a look at this thread:

Well, yes if you leave it that long (never have milk for that long in my house)-but it's good for at least 5 days after the use-by date, whereas the milk i get from a farmshop is definitely on the turn the day after the use-by date

I thought I would say what I did with the milk. Well after measuring out enough for the OH's brekkie in the morning i measured how much was left put it in a pan with the left over cream in my fridge (date was 1st but i only opened it yesterday) brought them to just boiling added my rice and turned off the heat. I have never cooked ricepudding in a pan before only in the oven, and have never cooked rice by turning off the heat once it has got to boiling point. and i must say I am impressed with the result!!! left it for about half hour with a lid on went back and had fluffy ricepud, left the lid on a bit longer as was still a little too much liquid but *YAY* a success.

Thanks for the idea, now the question is can i resist eating it and make it get to the freezer? not hungry as full from dinner but it looks and smells so yummy...
Muddling through debt but can't see any light at the end of the tunnel??!!

Most of the milk in our Supermarkets at the moment is '7-day milk' (just check the labels for display till/use by dates - there is a 7-day difference). But the organic milk is NOT 7-day.

My local Asda often has whoopsies on the organic (and sometimes on the ordinary stuff as well).

But all this business about milk going off is another good reason for getting the long-life milk even if it's only for the summer months.
  • Any ideas??
I have 4 4-pints in my fridge that run out in a few days and only room for one in my frezzer!! What can I do with them??
    I'm thinking pancakes but I don't know a recipe!!
