We recently bought a new mattress and noticed that, in 15 years all mattresses had got thicker and therefore heavier and harder to move. They now seem to be non turn, I guess partly so they can use a cheap material underneath and also so turning it does not give a hernia Now the dog cannot jump on the bed (don't tell me she shouldn't!). We bought extra dee.p sheets off of E Bay0

Yes many mattresses have become deeper over the years. As for the weight, that is mainly down to the increased use of pocket springs. The extra weight is actually the steel used in the springs.
Non turn mattresses really came about with the introduction of memory foam mattresses. Due to the memory foam being the most expensive part of the mattress, most manufacturers only put it on one side of the mattress to keep production costs down. They then realised that this could also apply to other types of mattress, so they started only putting quilting on one side. They would then tell people that for their convenience, you don't have to turn it. The truth is that nothing has been done to the internal components to make the mattress last longer if you don't turn it. So mattresses that aren't turned simply won't last anywhere near as long as turnable mattresses.
So if you have a mattress that can be turned, then make sure you do turn it on a regular basis. Otherwise you will be playing right into the bed industries hands by having to buy a new mattress twice as often.0 -
I still have one bed in the house with a mattress with a winter side(padded with woolen felt to retain heat and a summer side(padded with cotten felt)to make it cooler,Turning a mattress used to be part of good house keeping.
The sofa manufacturers copy the saving money idea by making the seat cushions atached so face leather/fabric on one side only.
Seasonal mattresses are a better option than non turn mattresses, although I still think they should be turned over more often than twice a year.0
