Why do people suggest cancelling Sky...

No - But would consider reducing my packageOK and its eally not a luxary. I confess to having sky and I confess to not watching much TV. My partner however needs it for his work (he is a journo for mags but does a bit of his research on the TV), so in our case, its a taxable expense for him. I have multiple health conditions and am very ill, I sometimes have no energy or concentration to do anything but watch TV, although I confess I could probably manage with the freeview box, but my OH wouldnt. There are of course free alternatives, such as joining the library, my library lend videos out 3 for 50p, DVDs from £1 - £2.20, as our DVD player is unreliable, then the videos make great value entertainement. Obviously the books are free. If ever I throw OH out, I will be getting freeview instead of Sky!
However, I totally understand how if your staying in all the time, really cutting back in all areas and never having a night out, you might want to watch a bit of TV, so in effect the monthly fee is less then a couple of hours in the pub.0 -
Yes - TotallyI'd quite happily lose Sky as I don't have it. Sick of Virgin - its been off (TV & Broadband) for 2 hours tonight. Going to work on sorting freeview this weekend. Have practiced my guitar for an hour instead, so no great loss (apart to the neighbours ears!)Debt LBM (08/09) £11,641. DEBT FREE APRIL 2021.

I know you weren't looking for savings ideas, but I will comment2) We also have Broadband and Sky Talk, which I pay OH £30 a month for, as I tend to be the main user. OH pays the line rental (£10) and the package cost (£5) and I cover the BB and the cost of the calls. (BB is £17 and usually about £10-£15 worth of calls) I know you can get it cheaper but we live in the middle of nowhere and so we have Broadband Connect.
If you aren't in an area where Sky have equipment in the exchange then you are not really getting any benefit, although £17/month is not a rip-off for an unlimited service. Also if you are paying that much extra for calls are you sure there isn't a calls package (even with another company) which will cover them inclusive, or is it mostly mobile calls?3) Our village is Sky Centralwe dont get cable here, there is no Freeview reception at the moment and our terrestrial channels are so bad that at best its terrible and worst completely unwatchable - I did the signal strength thing when I worked on Digital Helpdesk for the DSG group and it turns out there is about 34% signal strength here!!!
If you cancel Sky you are left with the equipment still and a lot of free channels, pretty much most of what you would get with Freeview. Obviously your OH wouldn't have his sports stuff. One idea is to remove the channel packs you don't watch - most people could cut the cost if (for example) you don't watch the music or children's channels.0 -

We used to have cable with all the packages.
When we moved here we got freeview. Can't say I've missed cable at all. I can't imagine wanting to go back to cable/Sky.0 -
Yes - TotallyOur Sky package is £100 (average) per month  and yes, I am in serious debt (on a DMP)
Before anyone berates me for this, I might point out the reasons behind it.
1) I dont pay for most of it - OH does. He has no debt bar a tiny mortgage, and he can comfortably afford it. He likes the sport channels

There is no way we could cancel - fortunately we are in the position where its something we can afford easily at the moment but we have far more things we could make a dramatic saving on before Sky would go.
you can still use free sat or free sat HD with a pvr which works like sky+
I assume to be paying this amount you have Sky HD and multi room, you do know that each sky box can send a picture to another TV and be remote controlled from the other TV (both TVs have the same picture, be it live or sky+). I have done this, Sky HD on the main TV and the rear sky output to our TV upstairs (since we would rarely watch tv downstairs and upstairs at the same time)
you can get the magic eye from ebay or sky will supply one and cable it in for more money

if you have multi room for the kids down grade them to free sat (can get a card from sky)
you could easily halve your monthly sky bill
your phone internet package is not the best as well and being remote is irrelevant (i live in a village)
check your exchange on sam knows to see if you have any LLU internet suppliers available

Yes - TotallySerious debt I would - but i only have the free sky channels anyway !
It's always something you could get back one day so it's not like selling off items of sentimental importance or one offs.50p/£24.00 Xmas 2010:rudolf:

No - Not a chanceI owe a fair bit, but am managing to repay about 500 a month. My G/friend and i split the 42 pound sky bill. But with that we get tv broadband and line rental.
If i cancelled sky and saved 21 pound a month i would probably end up spending that twice over in some other form of entertainment.
Saying that, if baliefs were smashing my back door in. I would cancel my subscription.0 -
Yes - TotallyIt's just about choices at the end of the day. If I couldn't meet my mortgage/rent, energy bills & feed my household without going into debt, then there's no way on this earth I'd be paying for Sky. If people can afford it, they should have it if they want it, but if people are saying that they have regularly got just £20 left for food for a family for the rest of the month & are stacking up debt, then for me personally, paying a big Sky subscription seems ridiculous. But it's about individual choices. We are all different & we all enjoy doing different things with our leisure time.2025's challenges: 1) To fill our 10 Savings Pots to their healthiest level ever

Hiya, I am one of those who will not cancel sky. Both DH and myself.
Do not go out to pubs
We dont smoke
We dont rent dvd's
We dont buy takeaways ( well may be once a month if that)
We dont drink excessivly at home, we buy a bottle on vodka for about £10 and this lasts us about 3 weeks, just having a vody and coke or slimline tonic a on few nights.
so £50 a month thats sky and a drink at home, works out at £1.66 a day for both of us, is well justified.
I feel we must have something or we would crack up . Its my wasting money else where that had caused me to be where I am.
xThankyou to all who have the good heart to help me.
