Unsure - Sitting on the fence
    Morning everyone :p

Just pondering a thought; I read the same old story on these threads and always wonder why people suggest cancelling Sky? I mean, I enjoy helping people as much as the next person, but losing Sky in my household would be like losing my left arm!

Whilst i'm all for both sides (I prefer chasing fault/unenforceability etc but appreciate some people prefer to pay back), I personally would rather get a default by a lender than lose Sky - I mean, we still have to have a little normality don't we? Getting into debt or whatever doesn't mean we should lose the right to live - granted, some extravagances could be avoided but not Sky - please don't take my Sky away.............:p :p:p

I'm glad you were brave enough to post this on - we don't really go out for meals etc as we have a 2 year old and it's still awkward getting babysitters. SKY is my entertainment and I totally agree that we still need to hold on to some sort of normality in the middle of it all. I thought I was the only person who felt this way!!

  • No - But would consider reducing my package
I remember a Springsteen song "57 Channels and nothing on" which kind of sums it up about t v to me some days...........don't have Sky but I can empathise with giving up something that you enjoy. I have been going through all my books and music when I get bored cos can't afford to go out and it's suprising how much entertainment and time filling pleasure it's given me
  • Yes - Partially (reduce package)
I totally understand the decision to keep Sky, we have an above average package. And it is pretty much the only entertainment we have.

I've been going through my budget and there is absolutely nothing else besides broadband internet that could be classified as entertainment. No magazines, no hobbies, no toys for the kids other then birthdays, no going out, no takeaways. Occasional trip to the cinema is about the only thing I can think of.

The CCCS debt remedy system puts a limit on satellite of £21, I've then included the additional cost of our Sky package under the 'Sports, Hobbies, Entertainment' section.

Have Sky, but I don't pay for it directly, it's part paid out of my rent. Only thing I watch is Simpsons, Family Guy, and any decent films/repeats of TV I like. So not really very much, and most of it can be got on Freeview. Only thing I'd die without is the internet, it keeps me connected, it means I can study and research, and it means I can talk to me family of mad loons.

    Yes - Partially (reduce package)
Yes - I'm in debt, but I'm fortunate enough at the moment to still be employed and although I'm currently paying Sky £57 per month I still have sufficient funds to give my debt monster a serious kicking every month (currently reducing the total approximately £800-£900/month), so I wouldn't gain a lot by cancelling at the moment. Of course it would be the first up against the wall if I were to lose my job!

I'm still only human. I still want to spend some of my income on me! :)

  • I am not sure.

I think I would cancel it but I love watching TV so I cancel and cut back on a lot of other things first.

    Yes - Totally
Hmm, was reading some of this thread earlier. I think that yes, if you are serious debt i.e. bailiffs at the door, struggling to feed your family/heat the house then yes sky should be one of the first things to go. BUT if you are managing to pay a fair chunk off your debts every month, don't go out much and do actually use the packages you've got then yes, why not keep it.

I've got sky, basic and movies which sets me back £38/month. It is a lot of money but we use it every day, not like a once a month night out on the drink...

Our Sky package is £100 (average) per month  and yes, I am in serious debt (on a DMP)
Before anyone berates me for this, I might point out the reasons behind it.
    1) I dont pay for most of it - OH does. He has no debt bar a tiny mortgage, and he can comfortably afford it. He likes the sport channels :D
    2) We also have Broadband and Sky Talk, which I pay OH £30 a month for, as I tend to be the main user. OH pays the line rental (£10) and the package cost (£5) and I cover the BB and the cost of the calls. (BB is £17 and usually about £10-£15 worth of calls) I know you can get it cheaper but we live in the middle of nowhere and so we have Broadband Connect.
    3) Our village is Sky Central :D we dont get cable here, there is no Freeview reception at the moment and our terrestrial channels are so bad that at best its terrible and worst completely unwatchable - I did the signal strength thing when I worked on Digital Helpdesk for the DSG group and it turns out there is about 34% signal strength here!!!
There is no way we could cancel - fortunately we are in the position where its something we can afford easily at the moment but we have far more things we could make a dramatic saving on before Sky would go.
