Which is why ive posted a FIVE POUNDS cable
If people wish to skimp and buy a 3 quid one then thats upto them
I'm with you, £5. is a reasonable sum to pay for a HDMI cable. The person who originally asked the question would be well advised to go ahead and get a £5 cable, if and when they get a bit wealthier they then have the choice of upgrading. Cheer up folks. Spend a lot of money if you want to, but remember there are people who just don't have £30 odd to spend on just a cable...Peter.:T

Ive tested a Molex, QED, Chord Silver, Wireworld Starlight and Van Den Hul Flat
My equipment goes through a very expensive mains conditoner and everything is wired up with 16 core braided mains cables to reduce RFI and EMI
On 'my' setup the molex had a 'soft' look to the picture (Compared to the others)
The QED was fine and had really god results
The other 3 were all better than the QED for very fine detail and movement
People can buy one for 3 quid and it 'work'. But it sure as hell wont be as good as a half decent one

Very interesting about your (expensive ?) 16 core braided mains cable. Does it extend to the mains socket, into the walls (replacing the single core cheap unbraded Twin and Earth), past the Consumer Unit, down the (50 year old ?) Electricity Board main feed, up to the substation etc etc ... ? NO

So the last 2 feet will make NO DIFFERENCE because of the rest of the cabling from the power station onwards.

I have seen in Currys etc, 'normal' main leads for £25, that are no different to the one that you can get for less than £1. Except that they are 25 times as expensive !!

Posted by me in a similar thread a while ago ...

YES in theory it (HDMI) is a digital signal, so is only 'on' or 'off'

BUT in practice the electrical signal being sent down the cable is not just 'on' or 'off' but different voltage levels that signify the 'on' or 'off'.

SO a poor quality cable, with the high speed of the HDMI signal (bandwidth) over a distance, will attenuate (ie lose some signal level) and deform the signal so that the TV will not be able to work out whether the signal is an 'on' or 'off'.

HOWEVER this is really only an issue over a distance of a few metres or more - a short distance (1 or 2 metres) it should make no difference.

QUALITY of the cable construction will have a bearing over its long term life, if you plug and unplug, bend it etc, and is a factor if the cable is burried in a wall, so hard to change.

IN SUMMARY - any cheap cable will do for a short distance. A reasonable quality is better for longer distances and if the cable will be hard to get to if you need to change.

DON'T confuse good quality with expensive - you will just be ripped off.

I do have a clue, as a trained Electronics Engineer.

I will say though, having re-read your post, that I had missed the fact you have a mains conditioner and agree this will help reduce RFI etc - please accept my apologies there. :o

However, I stand by my comments on expensive mains leads in general, especially if they are used standalone, that in themselves they would not have an effect as you are not changing the rest of the house wiring which can pick up all sorts as it runs around the house. People are conned into buying these without understanding the real reasons.

BRAIDED cables have been 'measured' to reduce both mains bourne RFI and airbourne EMI
Being an electronics engineer id expect you to know that. If you dont then im quite suprised.......

But surely unless the equipment is very well screened, it will still be succeptable to RFI / EMI etc ?

However, we are getting into the n'th degree on this aspect, and it is not my area of specialisation so I won't dwell on it.

The point is, ordinary people are being persuaded to spend a lot of money on cables that will make no discernable difference. Tell me that the £25 ORDINARY (not braided, multicore, oxygen free coppper etc ) mains lead in Currys is not EXACTLY the same as a £1 cable from eBuyer etc ?

I never said for ANYONE to buy one. It was just a fact that I DO use them which is probably why its easier for me to see a difference with hdmi cables as the pictures as clear as I can possibly get it

As for currys ~ theyre scum of the earth. They have been known to sell a 10 pound hdmi cable for 90 quid (Which makes laugh in away as its currys and comet that some people have used as a baseline to test dearer hdmis!). Based on that fact id say the mains lead would be no better than a cheapie lead off ebay or free with equipment or whatever

I can easily point people in the direction of half decent mains cables mind

Please supply a link because although I've been a licenced radio ham for the last 30+ years I have never in all that time seen any reference to this miracle. I guess I'll need to make sure I never use the more common stranded antenna wire as it obviously doesn't work.
