If it was a maggot then it would be a different story, but dogs eat bugs all the time!

I found a snail shell in my bag of peas, I just kept on eating through the bag hoping to find the snail, extra protein and all that....
    This did make me laugh.

Why are you adding extra protein (in the form of Winalot tinned food) to Hills Science plan which is a complete food anyway?
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

I'm glad somebody else spotted and commented on this too! :D

This is how pets become overweight/obese unless they are incredibly active and can burn off the excess calories, but it still causes a nutritional imbalance in their diet if done on a regular basis.
“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”
  • having seen the sort of things dogs will happily eat, given half the chance I would not worry too much. ?

I was about to say that. Most dogs happily eat poo but we'd be horrified to see that in a can of dog food, but why? Is the dog bothered? No!

I hardly think an insect is the end of the world if it is in dog food. Human food is different, but i wouldn't bat an eyelid if i found a pokey little insect in dog food. Considering the fact most dogs eat insects anyway if they catch them i can't see what all the fuss is about.

I'd have been more bothered if the food was mouldy or rotting (although with winalot you might struggle to spot the difference :rotfl:)

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I know dogs happily eat all kinds of nasties. So do babies, given half the chance. Woulkd you let a baby tuck into a green winged - intact - insect? Thought not.

And no, I don't need everything to be sanitised but how many of us would be impressed with this insect in the middle of their food??

I don't want any compensation. Just wanted Purina to take the matter more seriously than they seem to be doing.

I do have the photo on my mobile phone. I'll try to upload it.

I add the tinned food to half the quantity required of the Hills Science plan because I've always fed my dogs half dry and half tinned food. Neither are remotely overweight and are both active healthy dogs.

So you don't want compensation, but what exactly do you want? And did you report the problem to Environmental Health? Certain insects are considered a delicacy in many parts of the world, eaten by children and adults alike, it's the western world that is squeamish. There is no logic in being willing to feed your dog one dead creature and not another: I would have been very satisfied with £15 of vouchers.

Meat which is unfit for human consumption is not unfit for animals.

Not pleasant for you to see but not against the law.

Not entirely true (apologies for the reference not being a primary source).

"As stated in UK and European regulations, the meat for pet food comes from animal parts that are deemed surplus to human requirements or are not normally eaten by us. However, the animals must have been passed as fit for human consumption and should not be from any creature that is dying, diseased or disabled. “You tend to get what you pay for,” says Professor Hall. “In cheaper pet food you will get the cheaper cuts of meat. There could be offal, ears, tongue and prostate.”

I opened a can of Winalot several weeks ago to mix with the Hills Science Plan I feed my dogs. I was absolutely horrified to see a large greenish insect amongst the Winalot, immediately threw out the hills food I was mixing it with and emailed the manufacturers, Purina.

I got a message saying they were experiencing technical difficulties and I may have to wait some time for a response...I haven't had one yet, seven weeks later.

I phoned them a week later and returned the can and insect. Today I got their reply, that despite their precautions they get "only" a couple of similar complaints per year. That's a couple too many!

They enclosed £15 vouchers but I feel like sending them back. Although they assured me the insect would not have harmed my dogs, I'd really rather not feed them such things - and have to question how many dog owners would! Maybe they should put a warning on Winalot cans - may contain insects??

I think it's totally unacceptable. Just want some advice...should I just accept the £15 vouchers and go away or should i make more of a fuss?

I took photos of the insect on my phone so I still have the evidence. It just made me feel SOOOO sick.
Your dog doesn't mind, he will eat poo!!
    Just accept the vouchers.

ETA Don't report it to EH whatever you do...they will laugh you out of the building.
