So you don't want compensation, but what exactly do you want? And did you report the problem to Environmental Health?
Certain insects are considered a delicacy in many parts of the world, eaten by children and adults alike, it's the western world that is squeamish. There is no logic in being willing to feed your dog one dead creature and not another: I would have been very satisfied with £15 of vouchers.
I just don't choose to feed my dogs a food that has a large green insect in the middle of it and would never have purchased it if I'd had the slightest indication that insects had been crawling over it before it was processed.
I try to take good care of my dogs and it's important to me that they don't eat contaminated food.0 -
Your dog doesn't mind, he will eat poo!!
Just accept the vouchers.
ETA Don't report it to EH whatever you do...they will laugh you out of the building.0 -
I just wanted Purina to take the matter seriously. I don't care if they eat insects in other countries/we eat several pounds of insects a year/dogs will eat any old rubbish...I KNOW all that.

Contaminated in what sense, are you worried about bacteria? Stop worrying, all tinned food is heat treated so that it has a long shelf-life. As others have explained, there is no such thing as a ready-made food that is guaranteed not to contain any insect parts. Have you considered feeding your dog a home-made raw food diet?
You've already said you want Purina to take the matter seriously, IMHO £15 of vouchers is pretty generous for a non-toxic inclusion but clearly you don't feel the same. What EXACTLY do you want them to do??Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -

I don't see why they can't employ the same screening as, say, a baby food processing plant. If such an insect was found intact in a jar of baby food there'd be outrage. It should not have happened with Winalot and I wanted to hear they'd ensure it wouldn't happen again.0 -
I think people are being harsh on the OP. Although i can agree it's not the end of the world, i do think it's unacceptable. Just because dogs eat bugs doesn't make it okay for one to be in a tin of food.0

Because that would cost money and then you wouldn't be happy with the price of a tin!
As for being harsh on the OP, the OP is just starting to over blow the whole episode now. The OP has the ultimate sanction and can buy elswhere.0 -
Contaminated by the presence of a large green insect!!! I would've liked them to assure me they were taking steps to improve their hygeine measures. They said they used fly screens and ultra violet fly strips but still have some cases per year of insect contamination (their words). So the insect screening is inadequate.

How do you know they don't have the same screening as a baby food plant? There have been news stories about all sorts of foreign bodies finding their way into baby food - Google it.
I think what you are hoping for is the same level of protection as aseptic pharmaceutical manufacture (I used to work in a small hospital facility). This would not be economically viable, it's incredibly expensive both to run and to 'police'. The only way you can be confident of what is in the food you give to your baby or dog is to make your own from scratch.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -

I expect that much like human food, all dog food will contain insects - its just that most of the time they will have been ground up and less visible - this one obviously hopped in at a later stage of the processing and so remained intact...
So many meat products contain insects or their eggs anyway - which is why undercooked pork can give people worms...
The insect will have been cooked in the canning process, and really it is only another sort of protein, not contamination in any hazardous sense.0 -
OP, I can understand why you're upset, but given that the company have apologised, given you £15 of vouchers and from what you've written, explained at least some of their anti-insect protection methods in an attempt to reassure you, it isn't at all clear what else you're expecting them to do. I can understand if you wanted more money. Probably you could claim on the shock of finding an insect where it isn't expected.
Personally I think it's unfortunate but mistakes do happen. I don't think it's reasonable to expect them to up their hygiene standards because one can of dog food out of at least several hundred (however many they make in a batch) contains an insect. If it was baby food, then yes you could complain mightily. Insects are not a suitable food for babies.
If they did have the same standards of manufacture as a baby food factory, no doubt at some point someone would have to complain that the baby food was being made to the same standards as dog food.:coffee:Coffee +3 Dexterity +3 Willpower -1 Ability to Sleep
