If you like Polish food, try bigos (a type of stew with saukerkraut, cabbage, game and sausages). Sounds revolting, but it's brilliant, especially with alcohol. Barszcz (beetroot soup) with wild mushrooms is also very good, though it may be an acquired taste for some. Kielbasa (Polish sausage) is superb – there are many different types from different regions of Poland.

There are also some very good Polish cakes, though they are best when made at home rather than imported. The imported cakes are also not as good as they used to be. Had some sernik (cheese cake) the other day, and it was like cotton wool.

Lots of other goodies – though traditionally it is a heavy cuisine.

Would you know what the recipe would be for a cake I mentioned that I think translates as ''Mouldy cake''? Its yummy.

Not sure what that would be. I know makowiec, which is made with poppy seeds, and babka (sometimes a bit like a panetone, at others without yeast and with chocolate or spices), and szarlotka (pastry and fruit), but I don't know the cake you mention... :o

Oh goodness, I LOVE makowiec. I'd frgotton about that.

This was made I think with apple, and in very fine layers of crisp, rich crunchy knobbly bits, like northern italian shortbread..

Hmm - that was more likely to be szarlotka (very good). Makowiec looks a bit like a Swiss roll, and it is filled with poppy seeds. I don't like it as much as some of the other cakes - it's an acquired taste...;)

Poopy seed is a huge flavour (obviously influenced by Eastern Europe)in Jewish patisserie. I just love it.

Would have been funnier if you had used a 'yes/no' vote poll format for the thread...

Another one of the bearish posters balloons being popped, do you remember when they told us that our Polish friends were going home in droves, because the UK was such a crappy place to live well this may be reversing.

Not conclusive, maybe they are just hungrier icon7.gif

Tesco says that, since June, sales of Polish delicacies, such as pickled vegetables, carrot juice and canned fish, have risen by 15%.
