Be careful, if you smash your Mum's TV screen you may have to get a loan to repair it! Sorry about quoting your whole post, I don't know how to just quote sections.calleyw wrote:Up until the last few years there where never any of these loan companies adverts on TV.
But they know that people are sinking in debt and like loosing weight want a quick and easy solution.
I think that picture loan company one drives me made. He walks around the house talking about football. And saying that was easy.
People don't see it as such but they stealing from there future by being in debt and keep taking out loans to feed the debt.
They say there is pension crisis well of course there is. People are just not saving like they use to. People fritter away money on items that are parents did not have the chance to buy. But now it is seen as norm to buy a virtually brand new car once you pass your test at 17. And pay for it with a loan.
To be thousands in debt by going through uni. And then finding after all your hard work you can't get a job paying more than £15K a year.
This country is a mess. And finance companies are preying on the weak and the financial illiterates.
We are becoming a two tier country with the haves and have nots. And I am not talking about consumer goods but the access to the internet. With out the internet and you being able to have access I am sure that a lot of the DFW's would still be struggling along. But be able to meet like minded people who encourage them. They are finding it is easier then ever to get a grip on there finances and get one over on the banks.
Personally those loan companies adverts should be banned. As they irrtate me. I want to smash the screen in when they say it was so easy they really helpful. Of course they where they want your money.
Just glad that I can only see TV when I go up my mums once or twice a week. So there are some saving graces to not having a tv :rotfl:

So glad to hear I'm not alone in my frustration.

I'm sure I'll settle into a calm little DFW lifestyle soon and hopefully this wont annoy me as much, currently I drive the boyf mad with the daily ideas to save money, and my new cheaper meal ideas, he's proud of me tho. As for the preaching, I have to rember, the benfit of hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I hate the picture loan advert also he really gets on my nerves. I also hate the adverts that say they will help you out of debt and may be able to write off upto 75% of your debt which totally annoys me as people have got themselves in the mess why should any of the debt be written off.0

You know, you lot could stop watching television!
I watch 15 mins of junk TV a week and even that sends me in to society is royally !!!!ed up overdrive. Also I don't watch the news, and I am such a happier person for cutting that artificially but deliberately constructed depressive material out of my life. Even soap operas carry the same messages as the adverts do, so don't watch them either.
Instead, why not get off your fat !!!!ing !!!!!!, do some houework, write the family member it's been longest since you spoke to, starst your own business, do some exercise, learn a new skill or ANYTHING else constructive.
To me, when people say they watch TV, I see them trapped in a fake mind controlling world, just as you see non-DFW's stuck on a hamster wheel that leads to nowhere.

I have to agree with what you say. I recently stopped watching tv and have been much happier, although it wasn't a conscious decision, I just have better things to do! Have taken up running (I am training for a race) and lost a stone in weight and just enjoy doing other things. I do watch the odd dvd from my rental subscription but that's something I just fit into my week.Mortgage-free wannabe!0 -

Actually saying that my mum has said that if the TV licence keeps going up she is seriously thinking of getting rid of it. So I would be doing her a favour. And she has a few years to go until she gets a free TV licence.
Mind you I can't wait until it all TV goes digital as I can get an TV and use it for playing games and DVD player.
And I know there is no way they can argue and say I am watching tv.

Guys!
All of you have such great, informed opinions. Please come and comment on this thread so that I can include them in my dissertation project. I don't want to break the message board rules or quote you without permission so please come and we can discuss attitudes to debt all night!

I do not have a TV and for some it is a way to escape a boring humdrum life.
But spending hours on the internet is no different to watching TV. Even easy to spend money.
I do like watching the odd film or something like Columbo, Morse, quincy etc and all the really old TV series like the sweeny etc. I hardly think that programs like that will promote consumerism. I do admit to having a DVD player in my computer. But nearly all DVD's are bought with earned amazon vouchers.
But also I think it depends on your mind set. I know that I can't afford it so don't buy it. And that has nothing to do with having a TV. It is just basic common sense. Either you have it or your don't. So I think what you said is rather an over generalisation.
There is nothing wrong with wanting nice things as long as you know why you want nice things. Because you want them to look nice and not to keep up with the joneses.
Also your last but one paragraph to me smacks of superiority. I have not had a TV for years. But I believe I have no right to be superior over others because of my choices.

I think the worst is price drop and bid up tv - they spend all day trying to sell people stuff and every break is full of adverts for secured loans - what does that tell you about their target audience?? £2 saver club £16 so far!! - it's growing!!! :j
