Theres a new advert about a shop called bright ideas I think that got me wound up. It actually says that you can get credit even if you have been refused elsewhere etc. Then shows you things like sofa's and a new pc. Again targeting the people that are already in debt and need to get more debt to buy things they want, not necessarily need.

really dont understand why anyone needs a NEW car, why, why, why? I've been silly in the past too, buying things I don't really need, but this is just utter madness. Maybe I just have DFW tinted glasses?

Above is want I want to reply to ...I can't work out how to do it properly so have just copied and pasted above the bit I want to respond to. CARS! I understand what you are saying, of course, however....

My best advice to my grown-up children, I think, has been to buy the newest car they can afford. As I understand it the best option is not a brand new car but a two-year-old one.

DH and I struggled for years buying old cars and paying out hundreds of pounds to keep them on the road. Buying a nearly new one a few years ago was a revelation - the car was no longer a drain on our budget.

Very much depends on the make and model of the car, for example old 80's jap cars can be amazingly reliable, and cheap to buy! Plus learning to fix them yourself (or have a OH who can) saves hundreds a year. :) A two year old car is still expensive and will still depreciate hugely over the next 2 years.
