Asking for a favour...

I'm building a website about debt and bankruptcy for my journalism degree (http://journalism.bournemouth.ac.uk/lmeakin) and would really love to hear your opinions and experiences for inclusion in my articles.

Do you guys think that it's too easy to get credit?

Have you had experiences of debt getting out of control?

Are you scared of bankruptcy or is it a relief?

Are you owed money and feel that the debtor is being selfish?

Have you lived beyond your means or have circumstances forced you into debt?

If there's anything you want to say please post it here or go to the site. I'd really appreciate your help and informed opinion, and will always respect your privacy too.

Thanks!

    1. God, yes
    2. God, yes
    3. Both
    4. I would hope I'd consider their circumstances if that were the case. If they weren't taking the P*££ and trying really hard..... although if they give credit too easily, to some extent aren't big businesses risking this?
    5. Yes and yes

Good luck with your site, look forward to seeing it!

I think it's definetely too easy to get credit. I think the culture of only paying for things that you actually have the money for is all but dead. A very money-savvy friend of mine had an interesting experience about a year ago: she got a phone call from her bank inviting her in for a "chat"- thinking something must be terribly wrong she went along immediatly, only to find out the chat was to begin with "we just wanted to tell you about this great new credit card". When she turned it down they first tried to offer her a loan, and then to increase her (virtually unused) overdraft. When she turned down all three the bank worker responded by saying in motherly tones "You are going to accept that you have to take on debt at some point you realise.". I've seen similar evidence of this in the gasps of suprise when I inform people that I don't have a credit card. I think debt is just something that's expected these days- if you don't have the money its simple enough just to borrow it. In my teens I was constantly in awe of families who I was sure earned no more (and maybe less) than my parents, yet constantly had the best clothes, foreign holidays and kids with neverending pocket money whilst we seemed always to be wearing older cousins cast-offs and holidaying in Blackpool. I now realise that the families I envied managed it only by getting themselves into greater and greater debt spending money they didn't have, whilst my mother's attitude was that if you wanted something you couldn't afford, you saved up until you could afford it. It seems an even rarer attitude ten years later, I'm in minor debt myself after taking a loan to fund a college course(although it freaks me out its nothing compared to the mess some people are in) but often made to feel like a freak because of my reluctance to play the "just put it on the card and worry about it later" game.
I think credit is far too easily given for no particular reason- credit given for holidays, shopping and this 'n' that rather than for emergencies or pay-for-itself type things like education. Although people have to take responsibility for their own money, I do think banks sell credit as the free key to a footballer's wife lifestyle and gloss over the trouble it can actually lead to. I suppose they like to encourage people to get into debt because they make more money of those in debt than those with savings.

    Hi debtjourno,

    My answers:
    1. Do you guys think that it's too easy to get credit?
Yes. You generally only have to fill out a form online (they very rarely check the amount you earn) and then send them some documents stating your current address and ID. Within 4 weeks you have a new credit card/loan/overdraft!

    2. Have you had experiences of debt getting out of control?
Yes. But not as bad as others, I saw my debt getting bad and decided to get control of it. After moving it around to get the lowest rates, I regained control and can now reduce it at around 600 a month.

    3. Are you scared of bankruptcy or is it a relief?
Not really applicable. But after reading about others I would say I'm not scared as it seems a simple process and the people in the courts are rather informal about it.

    4. Are you owed money and feel that the debtor is being selfish?
No - not really in a position to lend it to others.

    5. Have you lived beyond your means or have circumstances forced you into debt?
A bit of both. I have a student loan, but that will get paid off in time so not worried about it. My debt is mainly due to my MSc course which I under took 2 years ago. Whilst I was on the course I didn't watch my finances properly and they got out of control. Now I'm on a PhD (thats why I done the MSc) and receiving a fair amount I can clear the debts off.

    Hope this helps,
    Jitsuguy

Do you guys think that it's too easy to get credit? Yes it's far too easy. Even getting a storecard is the easiest thing in the world. Realising that you can get what you want now without seeing the actual funds in your bank account decreasing is an extremely exhilirating feeling.

Have you had experiences of debt getting out of control? Yes and that's why I'm here.

Are you scared of bankruptcy or is it a relief? I have never had to consider bankruptcy before, but i think the thought of it would scare me.

Are you owed money and feel that the debtor is being selfish? I am owed money, but I don't think my debtors are being selfish. i know if the people i've lent money to are in a position to pay me back, they will. i too know what it feels like to owe.

Have you lived beyond your means or have circumstances forced you into debt? I haven't lived beyond my means when i was actually making the purchases. it was my indiscipline at paying back the credit i was given that landed me here in the first place.

i wish you all the success with your site.

Far to easy to get credit - fill in simple from wait a week or two - lo and behold I now have a credit card with a £8000 limit!!!!!!!

I don't consider my debts to be out of control - never had any problems making the minimum payment at any time, I now have them all on either 0% or 2.8%LOB cards. Reducing fast now.
    debtjourno wrote:

This is not really applicable as my debts have never reached a large enough level to consider this.
    debtjourno wrote:

N/A as i don't have the spare money to lend people.

Whilst at university I racked up most of my debt. Had the money just drank it away. Not good.

  • Thanks guys.

I was also wondering what you think about the idea of increasing financial education in order to help the situation? Do you think it could change attitudes?

Also, if anyone struggling with their debt would be interested in being a case study for the site please let me know. I'd just like to hear your story and use it as an example. Just leave me a post here or go to the site's contact us page and drop me a line.

Thank you for all the comments so far. Keep them coming!

No. nobody MAKES you apply for that credit card or that loan, or spend that money on crap you dont need.

Have you had experiences of debt getting out of control?

Oh yes. we've got a handle onit now, and the relief is fantastic.

Are you scared of bankruptcy or is it a relief?

would be scared of it, doing my best to avoid it!

Are you owed money and feel that the debtor is being selfish?

    nope.

Have you lived beyond your means or have circumstances forced you into debt?

lived beyond our means, been stupid with money, been ignorant of what we spend, and circumstances to an extent when I didnt work but quite frankly I should have done.
