i have 1 home pc - running windows xp connected with a cat 5e cable to broadband internet connection via a wireless router/modem
i also have a work laptop which connects wirelessly through the router/modem
I have been given another pc running windows 98 se (i have 3 kids..... say no more)
I want to connect this via a cat 5e cable to the router....
i have plugged in a cable into the on board nic and into the router..... the router recognises that it has a new connection, but the win98se pc doesnt recognise the router....
what am i missing here.......?
i know win98se can cope with this, all i can find on the internet talks about ICS (internet connection sharing), but this requires a host and client pc's!

I suggest you getting a newer operating system xp home.
Support for 98se is finishing soon or has finished.
You have children so get a parents, students and teachers edition from a store or amazon for about £700 -
the point is i wanted to spend as little as possible, so paying £70 is out of the question.
I am not bothered about microshaft discontinuing support.
the pc dosnt have a high enough spec to load windows xp on it.smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

chances are you may need to install a protocol called TCP/IP.
but before going into any of that, have you done any network diagnostics? Do you know if the computer is getting an IP address? check this by typing "ipconfig" in the run box.0 -
98 will work fine.
Try start run winipcfg
then do a release and renew
the ping https://www.google.com
or ping your routers ip address.
if that doesn't work try
ping 127.0.0.1
if that doesn't work, you may need to install tcpip, in control panel, networks.
when you get it working, try going to https://www.windowsupdate.com and patching your 98 system, as patches for 98 may not be available for much longer, so get em while you can!Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

just run ipconfig
ip address : 0.0.0.0
subnet mask : 0.0.0.0
default gateway : blanksmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

0.0.0.0 means you don't have an ip address.
type "ipconfig /renew" in the same command box0 -
I forget win98 has winipcfg.
use that it's much easier, it should list your network cards in a drop down box at the top. make sure it's selected and check you have an IP address0 -

just done it, no luck.
ping https://www.google.com didnt work
ping 127.0.0.1 worked fine
just removed tcpip and now just reinstalling it
edit:
just checked system properties and hardware, the pci ethernet controller is invalid. how do i find out which driver i require as i tried to reinstall the driver (using the win98se disc, in the hope it was on there!!!1)smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

the fact you can ping 127.0.0.1 means tcp/ip is fine.
The problem is your not getting an IP address from your router. try plugging into a different port on your router.
I know this sounds very IT, but reboot once you've made all your changes Win98 likes reboots0
