Do you need the car tommorrow? Best to leave it over night, any dampness might have dried out by then and it might start ok.

If it was dirt in the fuel I'd expect it to be spluttering a bit (kind of starting but not quite). But this could also be a damp/spark issue

I see you now said it is spluttering, leave it till morning.

It's basic rescue; no relay or home start.

thats right, i have no need for home start, (i have a nearby 'friend' who could sort that out for me) or relay, dont do a great deal of mileage, just worried about being stranded between here and work in the dark.
    So its worth the £19.
In actual fact, in all the years i have used them i have never ever called them out - touch wood.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

actually, now that i remember someone told me that my habit of driving on virtually an empty tank could damage the car,,, do you think that this is what has happened?

also in the summer, i did run out of petrol in the street and had to go and get some and pour it in, do you think this has damaged the engine??

thing is that i dont understand is that i moved the car this morning out of the drive and it was fine,,so now all of a sudden it wont go????

Someone has been scaring you unncessarily.

Running the car with an almost empty tank will not cause any problems ... but will save you fuel as you are not having to haul around a tank full of fuel.

Running out of fuel could cause a possible air lock, but that just hinders/prevents you restarting. The fact it restarted and has run for months means that didn't happen.

I can better that, I got Green Flag basic cover for £24 minus a Quidco payment of £22, total cost = £2 per year.
  • Have you tried bump starting the car ?

In the absence of a jump start, rolling down a slight hill or asking some passing lads usually does the trick. I have done this with a range of cars from Robin Reliant to Landrover Discovery.

Should that fail, you'll probably be more than a quarter mile from home by now.

You may have flooded it. It may have dirt in the fuel system from running on low and running out of fuel. It's worth opening the bonnet and checking for loose leads or wires and giving the electrics a good WD40 spray to lose any damp.

Sounds like it's not catching due to too much fuel, too little fuel or no spark.
IT doesn't sound very expensive . YOu have no handy mates who can check the basics for you..or your fellah ?

  • The catalyst may be damaged by running out of fuel, but not the engine itself.
You need to contact your recovery service and ask them to assist.

  • sounds like an immobiliser issue to me

    try using the spare key

and if that doesn't work try using the spare key with the other key held closely to the ignition barrel
