Seems that most people here are extolling the virtues of the Mashed Potato, with just a very few not so keen.

I don’t know why this question hasn’t occurred to me before, but why does anyone bother making mashed potatoes? Potatoes are great baked, roasted, boiled or fried, but they are rubbish if mashed. They taste soapy and personally I find it unsatisfying eating something that doesn’t take any chewing. Yet I imagine (I never made any) that mashing potatoes must be one of the most labour-intensive ways to prepare them. So why does anyone bother? Is it that poor quality potatoes can only be eaten like this?

And if it does make sense to mash potatoes, why not go the whole way? Put all your food in a blender and eat it with a baby spoon?

What's the point? Onion gravy & nice bangers, that's what the point 7.gif

My secret ingredient is mayo, it makes it completely different but amazing! Nice and smooth, little butter, maybe some cream, pepper and lots of arm work. Yummy!

This post made me laugh out loud, much to my OHs amusement. How nice to see a fun and lively debate over such an odd statement!

Potato, butter, a little bit of milk, grated cheese and finely chopped spring onion, all mashed together. Food of the Gods.

I love mashed potato, I always cook a big panful then freeze any leftovers in ice-cream scoop sized lumps, some plain some with cheese & spring onion.

Take as many lumps as you need out of the freezer and stick in the microwave for a few minutes until piping hot (stir a couple of times), meanwhile fry an egg. Put the mash on a plate, flatten a bit and plonk the egg on the top. Delicious comfort food in about 5 minutes.
