ripped off by tescos

last december I purchased a 22in tv/dvd player from tesco. I paid in cash and the receipt has gone walkabout, but I do still have the box that it came in complete with the tape that they put around it so security don't mug you on the way out.
I've been in touch with both the help line and tesco head office and both say that unless I have the reciept or credit card slip there's nothing that they can do. why is a company that makes a profit of £3 billion a year trying to stiff me for £200 and is there anything that can be done to stop it?

you need to have proof of purchase, not Tesco fault you lost the receipt. you could have bought it at a car boot sale already faulty for all they know!!!
Altogether now... NOT A RIP OFF!!!!! !!!!!!0 -
you haven't even said what's wrong with it (if anything)0

the dvd has stopped working, I fail to spot how that makes any differance though,0

If you paid by credit card, or Visa you will have that recorded on a bank statement possibly? That would enable you to provide proof of purchase.
If you can find that evidence then go back to them. If you have no joy possibly approach trading standards, as the goods aren't up to the job.0 -
The only thing you could do is take it up with the manufacturer, assuming you have a 12 month manufacturers warranty with it. If you can't prove where and when it was purchased then I can't see why Tesco should have anything to do with it.0

you cant get a resolution on this due to lack of proof of purchase, sorry
but....
what sort of person buys an electrical item from tesco, (for a start), without using a credit card for protection against this sort of thing, and then thinks so little of the receipt, your one and only proof of purchase, that you lose it then complain on a consumer rights board that they are trying to stiff you?!!!!!!.
on the other hand, you learn from experience. hopefully.Target Savings by end 2009: 20,000

Was it a Technika 22-208?
I bought one for £185 a couple of months back.
I hope mine doesn't blow up, but it was a great price for a bedroom tv.
However as it was Technika,
I paid by Credit Card
and on the receipt it says in bold letters - "THIS IS YOUR PROOF OF PURCHASE PLEASE KEEP SAFE"0 -
I'm assuming it's a TV-DVD combo, as they have a tendency to break easily (the DVD part).
I'm not sure what you expect to get without a receipt, otherwise people would be buying faulty goods on ebay and exchanging them in store for brand new ones.
Remember to keep your receipts safe, or better still scan and keep a copy of all your receipts. (That's sensible advice for everyone in the unfortunate event that you suffer a house fire and lose all your receipts).
This certainly isn't a rip off, however if the TV is reasonably new then go directly to the manufacturers.Legal team on standby0 -

1. Keep the receipt
2. Pay be traceable means (credit/debit card)
