My dd and her friend made gingerbread men to take to a folk festival with them (I refer to their cake making activities as Boy Bait, as they get the tent up, get the kettle on and sit outside the tent with cups, tea and cake!). They decorated the gingerbreadmen to look like all the different morris dancing groups there!

    What a lovely idea :T

    Morning all,

Having a slow start to the day as we were both tired, the weekend seems to have rushed by with having our nephews here, but they were great. They were picked up about 4 yesterday by their dad and I told him they were a credit to him.Their mum (DH sister) died when they were 8 & 10.

We dont see them as often as we would like, and trying to get this weekend booked was a problem with everyones various commitments, but we will see them at Christmas. It'll get even harder next year as the eldest will be going to Uni.

They all enjoyed the Classic car show, but not the journey down to the NEC,which took 3 hrs as opposed to coming back which was 1 1/2 hrs.Had an Indian takeaway for tea when they got back, and I had spent some time baking while they were out and made blackberry and white choc muffins, and some choccy buns from Nigellas Domestic goddess.I am going to freeze what is left to remove temptation,as I am meant to be dieting.

Well,I'd better go and do something so I can get to my sewing room this aft.Tea is sorted-'mixed grill',will stick it all in the Remoska so nice and easy.

OOH-Sunny,hope you're taking it easy and soon get sorted.Poor you.
Celyn- read in the paper yesterday that there is a shortage of fungi experts, which is a problem for people taken to hospital with mushroom poisoning as there can be a delay in finding s.o. to identify the offending ones eaten, when they need to know quickly.
Bitsy, hope FIL makes a speedy recovery.

    Have a nice day everybody.x

  • Good morning all:j
Am lying on the sofa surrounded by springy spangles (our new pup arrived last Friday!) feeling a bit under the weather. Not well enough to get to school this morning. Right ear burning, throat burning, can't swallow, headache, stiff neck. Managed to get an emergency dr's appt this morning. If a rash appears, it may be shingles, otherwise a nasty viral infection affecting neck glands. As I have a dodgy immune system he has sent me home with packets and packets of tablets to take - with food:rotfl: Soup is all I can manage at the moment!
Still, I know it could be a lot worse.......
Weather not too bad at the moment here in Essex after a lousy start. Had a glorious day yesterday so managed to get quite a bit of 'unpacking' done in the garden. I keep moving pots around until they 'feel right'
We must get back on the OS wagon. I gave in and ordered a takeaway last night:o. After not having had one for so long I was pleasantly surprised to discover that we did not really enjoy it all that much so will be back to the slow cooker as soon as I can find which box it is in:D

Hope you all having as good a day as you can.
    Lots of love
    Lilli

Mummysaver, it's usually fresh scones with a pot of jam. Who could resist that?

  • Morning everyone:wave:

Wild and windy here today. I have dd at home with a bad chesty cough. She is mildly asthmatic and is having to use her inhaler a lot. So we're off to the docs this afternoon. She was supposed to be having her flu jab later today but I suspect they won't want to do it if she isn't well.

Ds1 went to school with urticaria all over his cheeks and neck. I gave him an antihistamine and he texted to say the rash has gone now. Apparently he has been using his new field jacket (camo jacket) as a pillow this weekend while at cadet camp so it must have been that.

Ds2 is absolutely fine though (as always-he never gets ill):)

I've done my big shop and spent quite a lot more than I intended. I did an online virtual shop first and it came to at least £20 less than I spent. I've just been trying to work out where I went wrong. A few extra items and substitutions seem to have been responsible. I must be more careful next week.

Breakfast today was a smorgsbord of leftovers; scotch pancakes, potato farl, rolls, crumpets (all from the freezer), blackberry crumble, pineapple and mango. Most of it got eaten and the leftover leftovers were fed to the birds. I did contemplate making them into bread pudding but was afraid we'd end up with leftover leftover leftover bread pudding:p There is a limit!

I had hm quince yogurt -you can't buy that you know;)

Lunchboxes have granary rolls with cheese, tomatoes (still British- expensive mind), apples and raisin-oatmeal muffins.

I shall have ryvitas with avocado and cottage cheese.

Supper will be baked potatoes stuffed with onion, bacon and gruyère. Served with watercress and tomato salad and sweetcorn.

mummysaver - when she made them originally she just cut out normal gingerbread men shapes, iced them with little chocolate masks and stuck some silver balls on one hand. She also did skeletons where she iced the bones on. I've made ones using these cutters: http://www.perpetualkid.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1402 but the same would work with normal cutter taking limbs off with a fluted round cutter to look like bite marks. I iced sad faces on them :)

This is my sisters pic - whipped off facebook

These are made of fimo, but would work with cookie dough :)

    purpleivy - that's fantastic :rotfl:

Rosyred - I think in this country there is a sort of fear round them - I have found when I am abroad people are more knowledgeable because fioraging for fungi is more part of the culture. Lots of minor accidents in this country occur when people are looking for hallucinogenic ones - some similar bruising mushrooms will give you a trip to A&E rather than Nirvana. Major problems when people pick certain amanita species or funeral bells. If I have any doubts, I don't touch it :)

Blewitts are nice though, and easy to identify as they have reddish stalks - they taste of conifers :) Parasols are nice fried and quite common in oriental cookery - they can get huge :) There is hen of the woods growing near where I work too, but it's rare so I won't eat it and honey fungus on the tree I can see from my office, but I'm not keen on that as it tastes of wet newspaper to me :) We find puffballs in the summer from the fields near the house, oysters in a birch wood near us, St George's mushroom and morels by the river and various boletes up on the plain. There is a hedgehog fungus spot in the park :) Sometimes we find stuff we haven't a clue what it is - but generally we work on the premise that if we can agree on the species between us then it's okay. :o
