If it was a private rental, the landlord would be entitled to make a deposit deduction for the cost of removing anything left behind. Although your father had a securer tenancy, I doubt the rules are that different.

Maybe consider it, that instead of paying rent next month, some of the money earmarked for the rent needs to be spent on clearing the place.

tbh i got the impression (and i dont know why) that it was council or HA,
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • The kind people on here thanks for your help and comments, and as for the others, I agree with one post, if you cant help or post nothing useful for me, then dont bother. I have already stated I cant afford to pay. They cant get out of nothing can they, as for saying expecting you to pay the tax etc for me to pay nothing. That is not much help to me and I find this rather nasty comment. I can not pay for something if I dont have the damn money right. We have to survive on a budge of £20 a week for food, so how the hell can we pay out £70 of which we dont have, plus my sister in law hubby used to work for the council, and oh believe me, they get their bit out of it, they re sell the furniture and make money and are getting a free damn bloody council house that they can put a family in and charge full rates to, what more do they want. I am quite offended at the comments really about I expect them to do it for nothing. I cant pay for something that I dont have can I. I dont have power of attorney. My dad has no savings, just his pension and DLA, I am under a lot of pressure and can do without your unkind comments right, my dad has dementia and gone into a home and does not even know what day it is. So stop flaming slagging me off right. As for the others on here that have been very helpful, thank you for all your help and kind comments and its just a shame there are others on here that are judgemental to ruin it.
  • So you think the council should go to the effort and pay someone's wages to clear out your fathers house and not expect some of the costs to be covered - in other words you expect the rest of us who pay tax to pay for it?

If you have nothing nice to say, then dont bother right. I dont have the damn money right, what do you expect me to do if I dont have it, my father is sick and on DLA and pension. he cant even remember what day it is. I am really offended. The council make lots of money from peoples possessions. my sister in laws hubby used to work for council and he said they sell the stuff on and make a lot of money, plus they are getting a 2 bed council house that they can charge full rents to for a family as well. Plus my dads possessions would be given away for nothing. They were not given to him, he had to BUY them!

I came on here for people to advise and help me, not judge or critisize me.

But I have found someone now anyway. goodbye

Sorry to hear that dad has dementia. It's really horrible.

If I can sum up the constructive advice, it's as follows.

    1. You have no obligation to pay anything or to clean the house out.

    2. Go in the house, sort through everything and take anything that you want.

    3. Inform the council that your Dad is in a home now and is giving up the house, and they can dispose of his belongings. That's the best you can do in these circumstances to help the council.

As you say, the council now gets the house back, which they'll be pleased about. If you make it as easy for them to take the house back as possible then you have done your bit. You can do that by being quite clear that your father is giving up his tenancy.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
  • and are getting a free damn bloody council house that they can put a family in and charge full rates to, what more do they want.

Isn't it their house in the first place? You're forgetting it's not your god given right to a free home and free money.

Just because you don't agree with someone's opinion doesn't make it any less valid or useful. One day you may look back on this and realise that on occasion you have to work for things, and on that point why don't you pull a few extra shifts to pay for clearing the property or if the council makes so much money from all the possessions why don't you sell as much as you can, make 'loads' of money and then spend just £70 of it having the rest cleared?

if the council makes so much money from all the possessions why don't you sell as much as you can

Agree with both of these points. The OP says that the council are getting a free house and should be grateful that they're going to be making money from this free house? I'm a bit confused as to the logic behind this.

And the next point; if the council are making so much money from selling possessions left in a house, why don't you kill two birds with one stone; sell everything off (thus you won't have to pay the council to clear the house), and then walk away with a tidy little sum of money to make the coming Christmas that little bit more enjoyable.

Please note that these comments aren't judgemental or a criticism of you personally, but sensible advice on how to resolve your situation.

Did OP mean the Council make money or people like her BIL?

If the latter, it's gross misconduct and may result in sacking. Hopefully that's not why OP's BIL no longer works for the council.
Opinion, advice and information are different things. Don't be surprised if you receive all 3 in response. :D

Surely there must be at least £70 worth of stuff in there? Sell enough to raise the £70, pay the council and let them shift the rest of it!
