It has got to be cheaper to clear the house (or pay for it to be done) than to continue to pay rent?

Does anyone else watch "life of grime"? Every week people just abandon their houses and the council send in their team to dispose of everything! If you don't want any of the stuff left in the house, just leave it, refuse to pay and they'll sort it out for you. Not something you would want to do of course, but if you can't afford to pay for it, and it sounds like you really can't then the council will get it sorted and they can't charge you by the sounds of your circumstances.
I'm proud of my advice, if others want to look I say enjoy the show!

I suppose the real question is whether your father has money in a savings account somewhere? These are his belongings and he should be paying for the clearance. If he has no money then the council can whistle for it, can't they. They'll still be glad to have the house back and take someone off thei list.

Does anyone have a power of attorney to act for your father, or is he still able to sign paperwork?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I know it might not be to you, but £70 to clear the house is a bargain, you couldn't even hire avan for that.
The situation is that you need to clear the house and whilst you may be able to freecycle/give to afurniture charity etc ,. There will always be stuff left that you will have to dispose of yourself.
Do you have a friend with avan who could do a tip run for you.

I would take what you and your father want/need from the house and then just leave it the council will clear it if they want the house.
  • The council charge £70 to do a house clearance. Myself and huband are on benefits and no way we can afford to pay for it, plus I think its wrong anyway that the council charge for this.

So you think the council should go to the effort and pay someone's wages to clear out your fathers house and not expect some of the costs to be covered - in other words you expect the rest of us who pay tax to pay for it?

I agree with just leaving it. The bill would be in your dads name, not yours
so you are not liable for it.

He will have some savings somewhere, even if he is in a home he will have some
    income.

Let the council get on with it. Its not your debt.
