    Check - forgot that one [shower] :o & its a 10.5 kw:eek:

My dishwasher (Hotpoint, I'm changing it) has a bad layout inside & isn't very adjustable so I end up doing more washes because its hard to fit things in.
I would guess we do 14 loads a week in the DW
I use the tumble a lot for bedding/towels/nightwear/underwear.

This is all really positive in that we have already identified several areas for cutbacks. How many showers does your household take per day and how long is the 'average' shower? I switch off the water whilst I am shampooing and use a leave-on conditioner - saves a ton of water (and hence energy). Do you have an eco setting on the dishwasher, have you tried doing laundry at 30C?

Run the Owl on the tumble dryer, then work out your average monthly usage as a motivation to cutting back. I have one of these:
    http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/80119043
which takes up very little floor space, easily hold two loads of laundry, and is set up out of the way in a bedroom during the day. :T Even if you can cut your tumble drying by half (perhaps finish off to get towels fluffy?) you will notice the saving.

My consumption is lower than last year despite keep similar appliances I just turns things off when I can and always use low energy appliances even blue-ray player we got 2 weeks back uses less power than many

We also have low energy bulbs every where

Get one of those meters that plug in wall and you can find out how much each device works out. Pointless on fridge/freezers because they only coem on now and then.

Almost forget we have one large fridge freezer and one large freezer in garage always full of food as we buy offers
  • I regard myself as good with energy use, without deprivation

I read the meters today, I do this every 2 weeks and enter the readings online. Energy use has shot up this fortnight but it wasn`t unexpected as owl told me so for electricity. I paid just under £10 a week for electricity this time and I don`t have a drier or a plasma tv or psp or an american fridge/freezer, although I do have a fridge/freezer plus a new, freestanding upright freezer in the kitchen

I have been noticing that gas central heating also uses more electricity than I thought so it isn`t just down to cooking and more lights

Thats life I suppose and I am glad that I have a good surplus in my sp online account as I am definitely not scrimping on warmth this winter

One thing I have noticed since owl came here, is that the oven does actually take up a lot of units compared to cooking in the remoska. I was only ever able to estimate oven use previously and I think I was too kind

You do 2 loads of dishwashing a day? I'd think that's twice what most people do in a small household where everyone's out at work all day.

Do you use the washing machine so freely as well?

Shower - if you turn it off & then on again it goes reh hit, then freezing cold then back to normal. My DH is murder, he turned it on while getting ready to jump in:mad::mad::mad:
I do moan at him for this but it falls on deaf ears.

If I run the dishwasher on an eco setting won't it wash less well? I don't find it great anyway (as I said, needs changing).

I was everything at 40 (& 60 for towels, bedding & underwear), I always think soap & hot water to get clean:o

I have one of those (well very similar) drying lines, I use it for all clothing, because I hate tumble drying clothing.

The only way I could get sheets & towels on it as well would be to wwash more through the week rather than mainly at weekends.
But to be honest I don't really like drying anything inside the house, I worry about damp & condensation from it, so I don't really want to add to it. But I could make a greater effort in the summer to dry them outside & finish them off in the dryer to fluff up & decrease.

I have lots of low energy bulbs now.
I still have 8 recessed down lighters in my kitchen & 6 in the bathroom & 6 GU10s also in 2 fittings in the hall, stairs & landing. So those 20 GU10s will be soaking up mega I guess. I would like to change them for low energy versions, but reviews keep saying they are not all that. I don't want to spend £200 on them & they bring out better ones a couple of months down the line.

I borrowed an owl machine from work, I'm hoping they won't want it back.

Like I said, its badly designed inside (I think) & if you put a couple of bulky things in, its full. The MSE answer would be to hand wash those few:o

Don't know about the washing machine, I guess I do about 5 (maybe 6) loads per week & DD prob does 2 or 3.

Thats less than two loads a day, whats normal.

7/9 loads a week for a family of 3 seems an enormous amount to me. I think that, on average, we do about 3 a week for a couple.

You seem to be answering your own question about high electricity bills as you go along!:D

I do use my lunch break for the internet (MSE) & personal emails, but I think its wrong to use employers time.

    :

    lunchtime already?

FWIW I do 3 half loads of clothes per week, 1 load of towels and a load of bedding every other week.

My bed is superking. The bottom sheet, the duvet cover & 2 pillow cases is one FULL (to the max) wash. DD had a king size - same again thats another full wash. Towels (I have a love for giant thick bath sheets, with hair towls & bath mats & flannels thats another. Theres 3 on sheets & towels alone.
