Scones! They are so quick to make & really easy. If you serve with nice jam and clotted cream everyone thinks it's a real treat & you've spent almost nothing and haven't had to spend hours baking!0

I had friends over recently and whilst they weren't expecting lunch, I wanted to do a light lunch for them, which went down well, as everyone could help themselves and make up mini sandwiches:
mini pitta breads
houmous
cherry tomatos
cheese
cold meats
(the beauty of this is that you'll probably already have many of the ingredients in your fridge anyway)
I'd probably also do some scones with clotted cream and jam.0 -
We did an afternoon tea party for charity. can be a bit fiddly making mini things but I love afternoon tea!
smoked salmon mini sandwhiches made with value smoked salmon trimmings and some cream cheese of cucumber.
Triple layer (3 bits of bread) ham and cheese cut into wee squares held together with a cocktail stick
Egg and cress
wheaten bread with cheese
You could use cookie cutters to cut them into shapes, my mum has canape cutters possibly from poundland that she uses, wee flower shapes.
Scones with jam and cream are a must.
Shot glasses filled with mousse
mini cupcakes
Shortbread
mini slices of fruit loaf.
Some nice tea, we had earl gray.0 -
er - I dont mean to be awkward - but if they are coming for lunch, why do you want to do afternoon tea?
.
Don't go over the top on the food if there are only a couple of guests - if you don't want to be eating leftovers all weekend that is - a good bottle of prosecco or cava will give the occasion an extra kick.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

I'm a Girl Guide leader and whenever we get together for meetings/celebrations we always have an afternoon tea type lunch.
When I do it, I try to make simple sandwiches with good bread and good quality fillings. So usually Tuna sweetcorn, cheese and ham, egg mayo etc because even if someones fussy there is always something they will eat. I cut up into triangles.
Either sausage rolls, mini quiches or mini puff pastry pizza things
I usually make or buy, one of these - scones, pancakes or crumpets and provide jam and butter/cream.
A fruit loaf type thing.
I make something small and sweet - fairy cakes, jam tarts or mini muffins
Something else big like a cheesecake, pavlova or victoria sponge.
Lots of tea or if it's a special occassion sparkling wine.
Can't think of a better way to spend an afternoon than with some good friends.0 -
Afternoon tea is my favourite thing. We have it often, I think it's because it reminds me of 'party teas' we used to have at home on a Saturday night when we were kids.
My mum used to do lots of sandwiches, little bowls of crisps and fruit and make fairy cakes and jellies. It was probably all very MSE since it only took a fresh loaf to turn all the leftovers from the week into a sandwich platter and then a batch of cakes and packet of jelly and whatever leftover biscuits, fruit etc hanging about and you are done.
Nowadays we always do triangle sandwiches (with fancy fillings if you have guests) chopped up finger foods apple, carrot, strawberries etc, some pringles or nuts and a couple of batches of fairy cakes.
The cakes are really the thing everyone wants so spend a bit of time on
those. I do all vanilla or maybe some chocolate but then butterfly the tops and fill with jam and cream, or lemon curd and cream, or chocolate buttercream or icing and sprinkles. If you dredge a bit of icing sugar over they look so much better for it. And if you can beg or borrow a cake stand they will look a million dollars. I put the word around that I wanted a cake stand and six turned up from various aunties attics. really retro and MSE"A savoury muffin?? As if life wasn't disappointing enough!" Miranda0 -
Hi mortgage help,
As your thread has dropped down the board I've added it to the existing one on afternoon tea to give you more ideas.

Have decided to be grown up and host mothers day this year
Annoyingly (lol) there will be about 12 of us and my tiny kitchen won't cope with a cooked meal! And as I LOVE baking I thought it would be nice to do afternoon tea
Thinking sandwiches, cupcakes, cake, scotch eggs, quiche, rolls and poss crisps.
For drinks, obviously tea and fruit juice, maybe some wine too
But I'm worried this is a bit pants! But I don't want to do a massive buffet as can't really afford it. Lol.
So does anyone have any MSE ideas on how to make this special?
Thanks guys x
