  • I went to afab tea party last year - the hostess served us butternut squash soup in vintage tea cups, crusts off sandwiches, mini pork pies, scones, brownies and lemon mille feuille type things. Lordy it was divine!

We want to host an afternoon tea for a family birthday and are asking what should be included and what shouldn't be ?

Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.
  • Cucumber sandwiches if you like them, also ham sandwiches both with the crusts cut off. Scones with jam and clotted cream or butter depending on your preference. Then some cakes, my fave are lemon drizzle, tea loaf and treacle.

Have a look at some of the "Posh Hotels" afternoon tea menus. For example, the Ritz serves 5 types of sandwich (Ham, cucumber, cheese & chutney, chicken, egg mayonnaise & smoked salmon).

Sainsburys & Tesco (& possibly other supermarkets) sell packs of smoked salmon scraps for about £1.50. Mixed with a pack of cream cheese they'd make several rounds of sandwiches. Luxury taste at a less-than-luxury price!

Oh I love afternoon tea. Mini filled rolls or sandwiches with very fresh bread. Ham and mustard. Brie and cranberry. Cream cheese and cucumber. Smoked salmon and cream cheese. Egg mayo. Home baked scones but mini versions with clotted cream and jam. Selections of cakes. Also small trifles made in small glasses look good.
    Enjoy.

The key is to keep everything small and dainty and beautifully presented.

Small finger sandwiches, all crusts removed, I'd do cucumber, smoked salmon and beef and watercress. You could also add a few, small, homemade pastries too, such as mini quiche, or filo pastry parcels.

Then a small scone, with clotted cream and jam each,

And on the top layer, small , bite sized cakes e.g chocolate brownie squares, carrot cake squares, a tiny fairy cake, and perhaps a macaroon. Really any cake will do, as long as its cut into a tiny, bite sized piece.

Serve with a pot of leaf tea in a proper tea pot, into cups and saucers, or a cafetiere of coffee. Milk jugs and lump sugar on the tables.

It'll be a really fun thing to do, because its all about the presentation and making it look just right.
