Near where I am a pensioner recently took a speeding fine to court claiming she was desperate for the loo. Needless to say she wasn't believed

Best thing is to just accept the fine and points, if you take it to court it could go up with a worse fine, more points or even your license being taken away.

If you've not heard anything within 28 days of the "offence" you should be fine.

i'd fight it as well OP then when it goes to court you can prove to them that your kid was choking.... oh hang on, you can't so they won't believe you.

Pay up before they keep increasing the fine.

you didn't say in your first post.... did the camera flash? did you drive through it or towards it? what was the speed limit at that point?

I believe it is 14 days you recieve the notice within, the notice would go to the registered keeper of the car (the one your V5 document) asking who was driving on that day and time.

if you don't hear within this time or say a couple of months then you have not been caught.

BTW you can actually do 79mph on the motorway legally due to the 10% + 2mph rule. Speeding ever so slightly on the motorway is nothing when compared to speeding in a 30mph zone.
Tell that to people who've been done for doing "between 72 and 76mph" in South Wales on the motorway (earlier post in this thread). Your advice is out of date. :(

There is no such rule, simply a guideline some forces use. They can prosecute for 1mph over if they really wanted to.

Only on a zero tolerance road. They have to accept that analog speedos are fallible. It is almost impossible to make one perfect, when compared to a digital speedo. Hence the guidelines. If i got done for 72 in a 70 i'd be going to court. Where it would get laughed out in seconds.

That as maybe but the poster was making out it was a written rule and not simply a guideline. Two very different things.

You guys should come and live in northern ireland. we dont have gatsos over here because people keep cutting them down. put up two in belfast and they lasted two days.

Good for you, I recently drove to Belgium and had been warned of 2 new s-cameras on the main motorway near Calais, did have a little smile on seeing the lenses on both had been smashed.

I am opposed to speed cameras as there are enough hazards on the roads to worry about without everyone driving around with one eye on the speedo all the time. A good experienced driver will know a safe speed for the conditions, keep a safe distance from the car in front, give cyclists a wide berth and be ready to slow down or stop where pedestrians or other road users could be a danger, the list is endless but all you "I never speed" types are probably so busy keeping your speed right that all these other dangers are secondary.

Yeah I've heard about the Welsh police force, even doing the rally drivers.

Sorry but by law they HAVE to allow 10% tolerance for speedometers due to the nature of the manufacture of them and thme not being accurate enough. Why do you think the majority of fixed speed cameras are set to go off at 10% + 1 or 2mph?

As my mate works in Traffic for the West Midlands Police force I am well informed when it comes to traffic laws. Just like you can get prosecuted when speeding towards Gatso's.

They do NOT have to have 10% tolerance for speedometer accuracy - sorry, but that's rubbish.

Speedometers are legally required to not under-read AT ALL but they are allowed to over-read by up to 10%.

Therefore, someone who is doing an indicated 70 mph must be travelling at between 63 and 70 mph - hence why 71 mph actual is a prosecutable offence.
