We have had our kitchen for 4 1/2 yrs now and we bought it from IKEA. My dad got his from B&Q but having just done a small refurb he has checked out both places and reckons that the build quality of IKEA is superior to that of B&Q He now has a mix of both in there - I haven't been to see it yet but reckons that it looks great even if it is from 2 shops!

We have no problems with our units - they still look as good as new. I wasn't impressed with Magnet when we went there. Half of the things on display in the showroom were broken:eek:

IKEA also have software on their webiste that allows you to plan your kitchen at home trying out different layouts till you find one that you like

    Hope this helps

    Hi Niall

It really depends on your budget as to the best places to go. If you want bottom end (flat pack) then you really can't beat Wickes, most people in the know would say superior to B & Q and Ikea and the likes. If you want to spend a little bit more then you will start getting much better quality from the lower end German makes. For these and above you will really need to go to the independent kitchen specialists as it is likes of us that drive the market not the sheds.

Hope this starts to help you.

  • There was a thread on kitchens several months ago with lots of good posts,so do a 'search' under 'kitchens' and you should find it.

Certainly Wickes i found to be excellent,as did a lot of other posters. There were lots of negative comments about B&Q and the fitting service, but do some research first.

My Wickes kitchen is good quality at a reasonable price.

Ok been to B&Q and got quoted £4700 then with 15% discount £4018.

Then took everyones advice and went to some independants and said here is b&q's quote and plan can you beat it one was honest and said the doors we want are no use because we have kids and dogs etc. & the doors will scratch.
The next indi looked at the quote and said he will call us back!
His quote for like for like is £4200 and it is a german Kitchen....

He is also going to redue the plan and put Doors on the Free standing appliances as he has "special fittings" for them and we wont have white bits showing on a black kitchen.
so who do we go for eeerrrrr let me see ......

    thanks everyone Niall ;)

i'm getting a new kitchen soon and am going with Ikea. We are getting 16 units in total for £1700 in the Abstrakt High White Gloss finish.

Looked at Wickes, B&Q and Homebase and they were too expensive and in Homebase's case, the doors felt cheaper quality to Ikea

Ok here is the Dilemma now just come back from Ikea and had them quote on the plan that we have took everywhere.

    German Kitchen £4200

Ikea (are you sitting down) £2000
All are like for like quotes and ikea have a 25 year guarantee on the frame and 10 years on the other bits.

Who do we choose the geman kitchen from a local indi for £4200 or the ikea kitchen for £2000???????

  • Ikea kitchen is not bad at all, with the £2000+ savings, you can spend it on granite worktop or nice appliances or designer lights etc.
