I don't really want to try it! Just in case it decides it's had enough of life!

I think/hope my panic is over; I was using an older PNY 64MB SD Card and can only replicate problems with that in it. Other media are fine :)

Thanks, springbok. I'll definitely take the SD card back & get one elsewhere.

Someone mentioned the price of a 1Gb card earlier , remember the maximum these 2 vivitar cameras can take is 512Mb !!!!
Or so it says in the manual.

    Stuzhunter,
Yes I'd take the SD card back. Lots of places online have 1G SD cards for around £15, ebuyer, 7dayshop etc.
A 1G card will hold around 360 odd images on the 5MP on the fine mode, which is enough for the average holiday I would have thought.
If you didn't want a 1G a 512M card is around £6.50 and would be good enough for a day out.

512Mb is the maximum size of card these cameras will take , so don't buy a 1Gb. ( found the earlier post )

My partner has tried a 2gb card in the 4mp one, and it did recognise it.
If its crucial...our card was a Kingston branded).

In the 4345 manual it says up to 512MB card, anybody else tried a bigger capacity card in it?
I've got a 1gb KeyMem (the cheapest 7dayshop sell!) card in mine and it's working fine.

Could be worth double checking with others that seem to have had success with larger cards.

It may be that it will work with a bigger card but cannot access anything other than the 1st 512mb perhaps ???

I have tried a 1Gig card in the 5MP version and it works fine.

As the manual says 512Mb max. it could be that is all the camera software will address. Worth checking with manufacturer perhaps. Perhaps it will only format up to 512Mb ? Anyone filled their 1 Gb cards yet ?

Is there any way of seeing that it recognises that it is a 1Gig card and that it will not think it is full after 512mb has been used ?

You can get two Viking 512 cards for around £14.20 from ebuyer, (supersaver delivery), for less than most places charge for a 1 GB card.

I've ordered one Viking 512mb card for mine and a USB card reader, £13.40 inc Standard delivery, from ebuyer :)

Hope this Viking stuff is alright.
