  • Well done you for carrying on regardless. I have suffered the same prejudice and agree it's just jealousy otherwise they wouldn't be interested to see what you had for your lunch.
If I am in the staff room I usually put my nose in a book whilst mentally composing new insults!! :p:p
:wall:Trying to get a grip
  • we have the opposite problem

student daughter takes lunches to uni & complains everyone tries to steal hers:rotfl:

other 2 at high school take lunch in their Bento boxes
so many of their friends wanted lunches like theirs that their parents phoned asking what it was all about

daughter just bought her friend a bento box and cutter & tubs for her birthday, they just love taking their homemade lunches
and thats teens at 15 & 17 years old!

    ignore them all OP
you are having a lush nutritious lunch
let them keep their burgers etc

    i agree with the others
    there is a envy element
  • I have also experienced work colleagues making comments about my being a vegetarian and what I choose to eat at work.
Eating a Marmite and banana sandwich is considered weird!
Sometimes I wish I had the nerve to reply to someone saying that I eat weird food: 'That's because you have no imagination!'.
If someone makes a derogatory comment about what you're eating, why not turn the tables round and reply in a similar vein:'Urgh, what on earth are you eating?Looks disgusting!,or something similar. Then they might get an idea of how unpleasant it is to be spoken to in such a way.
The other option,of course,is to rise above it!
  • eww, do they have any idea what goes into these factory made sarnies etc!

Carry on as you are & be proud!

  • I always take homemade food into work. I hate processed sandwiches and the cost of them!!! I had tuna salad today and often take leftovers in as we have a microwave. I also have a bottle of dilute squash on my desk as Im not keen on plain water and Im too tight to buy cans of pop.

I dont get negative comments. Most people are quite jealous of my lovely dinners and quite a few make their own now.
I have every possession I want. I have a lot of friends who have a lot more possessions. But in some cases I feel the possessions possess them, rather than the other way round

    £6500 student loans
£5000 loan paid off yay:money: extra £120 a month to put on credit cards
monthly budget £600 for food, petrol , going out household/vets bills etc

Oh I'd LOVE a bento box, but I fear if my work collegues cannot cope with a plain old tupperware container I think they may just spontaneously combust if I brought in a bento

Well I won't let people change what I think or do but ahh it brings me down to feel self conscious or ashamed of my cheap and healthy lunches. I know I shouldn't :(

Thanks everyone for making me feel a bit more normal! Was beginning to feel like a total weirdo!!
  • If you leave your Tupperware in the kitchen in work they go missing here!

I know deep down that it's not weird to make your own food and eat a good diet, but it's hard to enjoy lunch when I feel self conscious about it because of people's comments!
Yes, heaven forfend we should make our own food  I really despair what this country is coming to when eating food that you've made yourself is considered weird! I'm convinced it must be jealousy or pure laziness - why cook when there are so many 'tasty' ready meals available _pale_
I think they think I'm mad for spending time making homemade cakes and the like, they just seem confused by it all.
They've obviously never had a HM cake before, because if they had they'd know how much tastier they are!

I worked with a girl who would spend £15 per day (yes, really!) on lunch. She'd buy packs of sushi, sandwiches, fruit and drinks, then pick at it and throw the rest in the bin. To her credit she did admit she was spending far too much, and she did seem to want to reduce her spending so I suggested making soups and bringing it in, but she said it was too much effort.

Ignore them, and go on eating whatever you are. It'll be much tastier :)

When I first started working at my current employer, I was about the only one who bought in food for lunch rather than buying something. Apart from one rather snobbish colleague who commented pityingly about poor people having to bring in a packed lunch (:p to him, frankly!), no-one else seemed to take any notice of what I ate - but, over the past few years, more and more people have started doing the same, to the point where it's difficult to fit my lunch in the fridge alongside all the HM sandwiches, cakes, containers full of leftovers... :)

My point, amongst the waffle, is - keep doing what you want to do, and you might just find that you start a trend! And, even if you don't get everyone else doing it, at least you'll know that your lunch is much nicer than theirs. ;)
Back after a very long break!
