Are you ever embarassed by your money-saving ways?

We used to call it 'carry-out' or 'carrying-out' (Liverpool), as in 'Save that last bit of cake for your dad's carry-out'. Anyone else use that?
I can't find any reference to the phrase anywhere on google now!!
(Sorry, OP for diversion!)
I think I've heard carry out used to describe booze brought from the pub (or maybe off-license).0 -
I would have taken the cheese - Like others - I have no shame & always have a half empty handbag for acquisitions.
And much to DH's embarrassment, I'm not averse to asking for something else to be thrown in with any large purchase.
But my best one was in a duty free shop - I really love Kenzo Jungle perfume & the cheapest place to get it is in airports so I went to buy one when we were going on holiday. They didn't have any so I asked them to give me the half full sample that they had on display - why sample a perfume that's not available. OK, they said no but did go through the back and gave me a presentation set of Kenzo soaps as a consellation prize.
Don't ask & you don't get.:cool:Debts 07/12/2021

Yes :j! My dad came from the Wirral (No! Not the posh part!) and my nan always got stuff for "grandads' carrying-out".
I'd forgotten all about that- thanks for the memory

I grew up in the Isle of Ely and we used to call the packed lunch that men used to take out to the fields as "dockey"0

Just as I think it's a bit vulgar to bang on about how much things cost, I think it's quite easy to go the other way and bang on about how fabulously thrifty we are and aren't other people thick as two short planks for being so wasetful. If they want/need to save money they'll learn soon enough:rotfl:
I try to lead by example and except with *very* close friends or my family I don't go on about how I save money. So I will take home the cheese but no-one will see me doing it;)
And I may be serving up food made from cheap ingredients but I'll make sure it's in a nice dish and has some fresh herbs on it or is presented nicely in general. If people ask then I'll tell them, but I want to lead by example, not by making others feel awkward or by making an exhibition of myself IYKWIM!0 -
People used to find it weird, one good friend asked "Don't you think it's embarrassing using a voucher for a meal out?" I replied "Don't you think it's embarrassing paying twice what I do?" She looked a bit gobsmacked but has started being more sensible now!
Our best man even said in his speech "It's great going out for a meal with these two... they always have a voucher. I don't remember the last time I paid full price with them!!" Everybody started giggling so we're obviously well known for it! :j0 -

My DS1 aged 14 has this summer passed his referees first level qualification, so can now earn some extra money refereeing football games and being linesman for others. The times he is allowed to charge petrol mileage we get that.
Over the last few weeks he has had a regular run of both types of work, so much so that he has treated myself, DH and his brother DS2 and given each of us some cash just for us. He has also had some to spend on himself and put some into the bank ( we have insisted that a minimum of 20% goes into the bank each month).
He also has a parttime summer job cutting the grass at DH work and last year earnt and saved enough to pay for his season ticket to this years football matches for his chosen team, he pays his own bus fare to get to and from the matches and only asks us for a lift if it is a nighttime kickoff as there are no buses; even then he offers us petrol money which would have been his bus fare.
He has learnt all this from watching how we deal with our money and both boys know that things have to be saved for. A few years ago they both saved all their birthday and pocket money and at the beginning of the summer holidays had enough to buy a Wii between them, and they then had use of it all holiday.
DH has recently done quite a few hours overtime in order to be able to pay to take DS2 away for the weekend to watch his favourite football team, the boys knew why he was working the extra and appreciated that he couldn't be at home and get the money for the trip.My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
So we’re empty nesters.
Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman0 -

I think my sister was a bit embarressed when I went to house sit for a few days and contructed my lunch and evening meals from the remains of the roast chicken she was going to chuck, a few (very nice) sausages, dried beans and vegetables. And part of a curry sauce that the kid's were having.
Extra food cost for three days - one bottle of wine.
It gave my BIL a few thoughts. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0
