It depends on the water co. as they all have different meters and ways of reading, we have things called "outreaders" a small electronic box that fits on the wall outside and attatched to the main meter inside via a cable and shows the reading, its worth checking that they both read the same as sometimes the outreaders can go a bit wappy and have incorrect readings on them.
Some of the internal meters are in "intex" boxes similar to gas an electric boxes and are built into the walls you open the door and the meter is just inside.0 -
Our water meter is in our kitchen but nowhere near our sink - our stopcock is in one corner of our kitchen (not a corner near an outside wall even) and the stopcock is there - behind a built in set of kitchen unit (drawers) so when the meter reader visits we have to take the drawers out of the unit to enable him to read it.
BTW the water meter person reads the water meter in much the same way as a gas or electric meter reader would read your meter if it wasn't in a box on your outside wall !There's no woman sicker than the woman who is sick on her day off !0 -

I have the compulsory water meter, they said it had to be installed
However, once the water company decided to do an internal survey they closed the job.
So I go back to the old bill and can wash my veg, use my dishwasher, and water my garden without worrying about the cost
It had really played on my mind that each watering can would cost something0 -

So this means you are going to be wasteful with water then as you arnt metered you dont care ?
(Keep pressing the dam thanks button instead of quote !)0 -
i live alone and converted to a water meter 2 years ago. I would probably be paying nearly £300 pa by now, for sewage and water costs, from 2 different companies, but, I now pay less than £100 pa. Mind you, i am Miserly in the extreme with water !! The local water company replaced the meter (in the pavement) twice before talking to me and realising how frugal i am !!!!0

Not don't care, I was worried about how much it would cost, I prefer the fixed tarriff.
I found I was wondering how much water was going in my watering can when feeding my garden and how much it would cost for the two cans I used every few days.
Now I can freely turn on the sprinkler system and buy one of those cheap pools from Costco
Have a thanks back0
