When fitted indoors they are usually just after the internal stop tap.

Mine's outside on the pavement at the front of my house, we have to prize it open with a screwdriver to check it.

I've just moved into a new build, and my water meter is practically in the street !! It's almost like a mini grid - it has a black lid, which I prise off with a screwdriver, and then the meter is about a foot down - which was really inconvenient, as it was splashed with mud, and I had to get my arm down there and clean off the bit where the numbers are...not something I'd relish doing when it's been raining !!! So, be aware, it's not the meter you're looking for - it's a small round plastic grid, about the size of a side-plate (if it's anything like mine !) Hope this helps.

It would be at the easiest place to access without entering on your property.

We had one in Leybourne and it was on the pavment touching our boundry and the boundry next door.

I'm really interested in the idea that a water meter could be located within the property. If it is - e.g. under the kitchen sink - then how does the water company read the meter in order to send you a bill?

All the properties in our village are on water meters and they're all out on the street. You can follow the line of water meters along the whole length of the street. Just a little metal lid, with "Water" stamped on it. Not to be confused with the fire-hydrant, though ;)

So ... if they're not on the street, how does the meter get read?

with most new builds that have water meters located in the property ie under the sink where they cannot be read by a meter man, you will find on the out side of the house usually located close to gas and electric a black circular bit of plastic with metal centre, this is connected to the water meter and will conduct electricity. Meter man touches the the centre with a reader and a signal carries the digital signal that shows the reading to his meter
