Cheap Bacon!?

Does anyone know who is the cheapest for decent bacon for my bacon butties!! :D

Not Tesco value as you spend ages trying to untangle the stuff!

I used to get Lidl's but their prices kept creeping up. Any better alternatives?

Many thanks,
David

  • I buy mines in Sainsburys.

Two packs for £4 I think it was. 8 slices per pack so thats 16. Thick slices too!
When dealing with the CSA its important to note that it is commonly accepted as unfit for purpose, and by default this also means the staff are unfit for purpose.

I buy mine at either Somerfield or Morrisons (because that's where I shop) when it is on offer. I then open it and divide it into single sarnie portions and freeze it. That way I always have bacon in and never pay full price for it.

Waitrose Essential Smoked - multi pack.

    http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/ocado-compare-prices/Bacon/Essential_Waitrose_British_Smoked_Rindless_Back_Bacon_Rashers_700g.html

4 packs for less than £5.50:money:

Its lovely, wafer thin, fantastic grilled till just going crispy on the tiny bit of fat.

PS the pack has changed, but the name is still the same.

I usually buy mine in Iceland unless someone else has a good offer. Iceland Economy bacon 250g £1 a pack smoked or unsmoked, usually 8 slices, better than the Tesco value and cheaper.

My local butcher is only slightly more expensive than the supermarket and the stuff doesn't shrink down to half the size in the pan (tastes nicer too). Of course, supermarket offers on bacon come round pretty regularly, but when there isn't one you may find better value at your butcher.

I tried the Iceland economy bacon today, but found it has the same problem as the tesco value. The vacuum packaging crushes the bacon slices together so you end up ripping the slices to pieces. It all just ends up as one big mess.

If they put it in the normal packaging it would be great.

I might try the freezing route, I've never frozen bacon before.

    Worth a go!

    Thank you :D

Count me as a bacon expert ive tried all the supermarkets the buthchers ect ect - but on our local market they sell the old fashioned danish bacon for 2.20 for 10 medium slices (prepaked)- nothing compares its tasty salty and delish and although I totally agree with supporting local butchers trade (uk) I cant find any better when it comes to bacon. Look for DANISH in big letters - I challenge anyone to beat it - unless you pay a fortune for for homegrown organic well fed piggy stuff.
Save saynoto0870.com in your favorites, and stop giving companies more £££ dialling 0870 numbers when you can dial freephones or cheaper alternatives.:j
  • I've started using my local butcher recently 'cos I find the supermarket bacon very expensive and watery, unless you buy the premium brands. He sells delicious, thick, back bacon for £3.99 a kg. HTH
  • I use Tesco value - I use the streaky, you can check how thinkly it is sliced and it is not too difficult to get apart.
