  • Fantastic thread people, I love it. Been overpaying on a loan a bit this year, was great seeing it coming down, then Xmas shopping kicked in and had to stop overpaying for a while. Cant wait till January.

My OH on the other hand will spend money at the drop of a hat on any old rubbish, I've tried to educate her about the MSE ways but its proving hard work. Any advice???

  • The best thing I have found is the 100 day challenges, I don't buy magazines or toiletries regularly - I bought both today for only the 3 time this year - I used to buy both each week!

And I love reading people's diaries.

    Nevertheless she persisted.

Since coming on here I have found I have done well using the following tips:

    • Buying whoopsied meat makes the grocery budget stretch
    • Rubber chicken :D
    • Ebay free listing days are designed for DFWs :D
    • Music Magpie to sell my old CDs, games and DVDs (Not forgetting to get the Quidco on it too!)
    • Using Quidco when shopping
    • Not buying anything without checking on here first (must-haves, Xmas presents etc)
    • Taking advantage of any offers in newspapers - cheap books, token collects, money off shopping. I usually manage to "womble" these from work colleagues without buying the paper :A
    • Taking flasks into work for my coffee and making my own lunch at least 4 times a week
    • Using Bangzo for the Free Book of the Day has gotten me three Christmas presents at minimal cost
    • Joining the Payment A Day Challenge has helped my to half my debt in a year
    • Not being ashamed to say to people "Sorry, I can't afford that". The shame is in spending money to keep up with friends/colleagues then having sleepless nights wondering how you're going to pay for it
My biggest tip is to spend time on these forums reading some people's inspirational stories and remember that it only starts with one step. The rest is up to you.

    Hi,

    Great thread.

    My tips are:
    • taking lunch to work
    • using cash wherever possible
    • keeping a change jar (and/or sealed pot) for treats or half debts half treats
    • use quidco for online purchases
    • use emails/social networking to contact friends rather than texting/calling
    • set a limit on what to spend and who to buy for at Christmas (Hubby and I only buy for Neices and Nephews and only spend £5 on each of them)

another one for QUIDCO the money we madeback so far this year paid our contents insurance in full and should have almost enough cashback to paid the pet insurance outright come april.

Discovering my own front yard..i still dream of far away places but we had a great year this year packing up a picnic and roving around Cornwall visting places the kids hadnt been to for the cost of fuel and not much else.

pooling resources with friends and family when shopping the bogof deals arn't that great if you only want one but half price is good, mother and i are also doing the morrison £25 deal between us at the moment.

keeping a sense of humor about it all....that is prob the best tip ive picked up so far
  • I have to agree with flying fresian - not being ashamed to say when I can't afford to do something. I would never have admitted to being short of cash before but don't have a problem now. In saying that, I am less likely to be short of cash now that I budget better :D

I can also now say no to OH and DD's without feeling guilty as my giving in to OH overspending is partly how we got here.

Great site - couldn't have done it without you all.
