  • Lidl & Aldi definitely dont want you to pack at till. Im from germany which is where they are noth from and NO ONE packs at the till. If you are brave and do, you are likely to get a few raised eyebrows form the q lol. Anyway I do try to pack at till altho I often eventually give up as the cashiers are just too fast !

In supermarkets in general, what annoys me is:

    (i) people who put their stuff on the belt, just to get ahead in the queue, then disappear to get their remaining items, meaning everyone has to wait until they come back

(ii) couples where one person (usually the bloke) just stands around doing nothing, while the other does *all* the packing- doesn't he realise that by helping out, they could reduce the packing time by half?

(iii) those people (usually women) who insist on packing every single item, and only then hunting for their purse and then their card. Why not have the card ready, so that the card validation can be done while they continue packing?

Am I turning into Victor Meldrew I wonder?...

Just to comment on point 2...my OH doesn't pack because he packs it all wrong!
*wonders when they will make dressing gowns acceptable day wear?*

I must have odd Lidls near me then... I didn't know they were supposed to go fast too. The one I use most is soooooooo slow. It is the quivalent of a Tesco metro / Sainsb Local etc and doesn't do any of the special deals but is open late (till ~11pm I think). I've only ever seen 1 person using a trolly there (they were buying ~30 bags of chips lol) - everyone uses baskets which we have to leave at the end of the converyor belt and then fill a bag as they scan or struggle to decant it all to the packing area with no basket/trolley to put it in. Its certainly no faster than a till anywhere else... Aldis however are super, super, super fast - but no baskets which really annoys me...

Snowbrow can I ask where you bought your basket?

    Thanks

Me too, Me too:T!! is it foldable, looks like it might be?
    TIA.

    Edited to add:
The basket pictured is made by a German Company Reisenthal. The bag is their "carrybag" and comes in different sizes. I can't (yet) find a UK supplier but there is this shop here. It's 25-49 euros though, so not cheap, but does come in lots of nice designs.

    It's only a game

I expect some of the Aldi & Lidl till design comes not just from being a budget store but also what is the norm in other countries. I lived in Sweden a few years ago and in the packing area there was a divider that could be moved to the left or right so 2 different customers could be using the packing area. I'm sure they were common in the UK about 20 years ago but seem to have disappeared. I quite like the paddle idea actually as the next person can be served without rushing the first person at all.

I've found the service at Lidl so rushed it is downright rude (more or less snatching money from your hand and throwing the change back) and is one of the reasons I don't shop there. I know it is a budget store but there has to be a balance and I really wouldn't mind paying a few pence more to get treated with respect. Oh well, there's plenty of alternatives I can shop at and there are plenty of people that like Lidl's prices so that's fair enough.

What does concern me though is if every supermarket started going purely self service or set targets for till staff. I work at M&S and we are instructed to ask every customer if they want help packing their bags (I use a bit of common sense as it is obvious when people want to pack themselves). A lot of older customers really appreciate having their shopping packed for them and not being rushed. Till work might not be glamorous but it is really nice to be able to help people in that way.

One day all of us will get old and might need a bit of extra assistance. Blind people require a personal shopper, and some wheelchair users sometimes need a few items reached down for them. At the moment with the exception of Lidl I think most supermarkets cashiers still offer good service. I hope the current balance between price and service is maintained, if prices go too low at the expense of service then heaven help us when we get old.

You're right there, my old Mum had one day out a week shopping and she often came home happy due to the nice people in the shops she usually visited. She knew a lot of them well, and it's not a small town.

She also had a way of dealing with the ones who shop and have no manners while doing so...one day I left her wandering round Morries while I got her heavy stuff...and came round a corner to see her grab the trolloy for balance and kick a guy up the bum ..apparently he'd scraped her with his trolley :rotfl:

    t

PS I'd like one of these bags..see how much hassle I'd get shopping then :rotfl:

Yes, I heard you had to memorise every price. I remember when they first opened a store about 10 miles from where I lived in about 1994/95 and they were paying £7/hour.

And it's still £7/hour, so a good example of a company who are still paying the same wages as 10 years ago... there are a lot more than people realise, but it's difficult actually being able to name them in a discussion :)

People without a job are always told "Go to Lidl, £7/hour" - as most Lidls seem to have about 4 staff in total, I doubt there are many jobs going at any time!

Then i guess the turnover of staff is very high at lidl. I cant imagine that its the exact same people sitting there in those jobs looking for their cost of living rise each year - and realising there isnt one:eek:. So Lidl must be changing a high proportion of their staff over every year.
