Lidl Etiquette

I occasionaly - and becoming more often shop at a local Lidl as it's handy for popping in on the way home.

now, I know their prices are lower than the major players because of basic store design/decor and less staff higher throughout etc.

The latter seen on the tills. Do they have targets to meet as to how quickly items are scanned? Ie the till is short on purpose I think to "persuade" the customer to get a move on - ie the Trolly must be "parked" in the right position at the end of the till.

Back to the question should one just chuck the items in the trolly - and pack later?
Or pack as it's scanned - which is slower?

Just that on the receipts one can clearly see the breaks in the items where the cashier has had to stop scanning for a moment as the till area is full of products?

I note there is a big table type affair behind the tills - so I'm guessing the etiquette is to pack later.
I would tend to agree with this.

Thoughts?

Our local Co-op used to have your full trolley at the front, than a shelf (not conveyor belt) and then an empty trolley to put your checked out items in. There was a packing area at the back. I much preferred this to what they have now. There's no need to rush and everything gets packed properly.

In Lidl's I try to pack as I go along. If things start to build up then I just put them in the trolley and pack them behind the tills after i've paid.
  • Yes. Just put all your items in the trolley after they have been scanned and take them over to the packing area (it is a shelf in front of the windows in my Lidl), then pack them in a way which is convenient to you.
It also helps if you put your stuff on the conveyor belt with the heaviest things first and the delicate stuff last. This ensures that things don't get squashed when you throw them in the trolley.
Don't forget to take your own bags!!!

Cool. Thank you, I am doing what is considered to be "Good Lidl Manners" then!

As usually the girls and guys on the till also double/tripple up in other duties so often see a little bit of annoyance if someone is taking their time packing at the till and holding everyone else up and the pile of goods after being scanned grows higher and higher!

If everyone did this - then the time lost in packing separately is more than saved by not having to queue up in the first place.

My other half works at Lidl and they do have targets for til scanning speed. If they're too slow they're out of a job. Thats why they get you to put all of your stuff on the conveyor belt first before they start scanning, so that it speeds things up when you're at the other end packing :)
  • i always pack my stuff as i go along, no matter where i shop, as i feel taking it out of trolley then putting it all back in your trolley to have to take it out again to pack it is a bit silly and a waste of time, just my opinion of course! I do however put my items on the conveyor belt in categories,, fridge stuff together, tins together, veg together etc,, so that pile of items can go in one bag,, i have the bags in my trolley ready and open and just place the items in the bags. Simple really :-)

I wondered why they used to virtually throw the items at me when we used to shop there! We gave up packing in the end, and just had bags and boxes in the boot of the car to empty the trolley out into.

Interesting to know they do have targets - I thought they did by the way it prints out on the till.
I'm all for it though, it's what keeps the costs down.

interesting to read this, it has often annoyed me in lidls that the checkout staff move my trolley from the end whilst i'm packing to put it into the "right place". i have asked why they do this but never got a proper answer??!!! now i know!!!

Lidl and Aldi both want you to put your stuff in the trolley first and then pack it on the packing shelf. If you try to pack as you go along they are unlikely to moan at you BUT it slows everything up and causes delays in the queue. You might feel that this dual pack method is a waste of your time but it is what is considered 'normal' in these stores. Packing as you go might be better for you - but it wastes cashier time and also other customers time as well.
