Morning,
not sure if its the snow or the January blues but i am loosing the commitment!
We made a large overpayment this month and i have to confess, it doesnt make me feel that great! the payment hasnt really taken us past any significant milestone on our journey to becoming mortgage free and i cant help thinking i have just put my entire christmas bonus and some savings (which i work very hard for all year) into something intangable.
We have no holidays planned for this year, i am working harder than ever and need something to look forward to. A slightly lower negative figure on my mortgage statement doesnt seem to be doing it for me!
Sorry for being negative but in the hope of some positive encouragement, i though i would stick todays thoughts on here!!
Keep going - all of the hard work will pay off; don't give up. We all have to keep each other going.2022 Target - Reduce new mortgage balance after house move - Part 1 (Ported) Starting balance £39,982.12 currently £37,242.19 Part 2 Starting Balance £101,997.88 currently £96,197.38 (as at 19/04/2022)0 -
Yeah I only have 1 income too, I want a nice life, I'd like a holiday, and if I can pay off the mortgage early then all is good. Particularly whilst rates are so low I want to pay off as much as I can realistically afford whilst maintaining a sensible quality of life. I dont wan't to penny pinch, but if I can cut needless expenses out then I will.Mortgages Oct 2020: £308,283 Jul 2021 £286,600 October 2022 £253,456 MFW-22 #9 MFIT-T6 #350

Morning All,
Sorry if i have made anyone feel sulkey about their overpayments, that was not my intention at all! I wish i could have a low mortgage and make low overpayments but unfortunatly i am one of those 20 somethings who purchased in the boom times. My mortgage is big so i have to do something big to pay it off!!
I count my self very lucky to be in a position to do something about it now whilst external factors are in my favour! Make hay while the sun shines and all that!!
Anyway, received my letter from Nationwide today. Term is down to 13 years 6 months. In 18 months we have reduced our term by 21 years 6 months!:D

That's fabulous news Z1ppy - hope it helps you feel at little more motivated. Like previous posters - I think you should treat yourself to some holiday time to reward yourself for your hard work0

You deserve it.
There is no way that I could have got the OH on board if we didn't have something to look forward throughout the year.
We like our holidays as they break up the year nicely (it's nice to have something short-term to look forward to-especially when work can be demanding/stressful) and you don't feel that you've put your life on hold to pay off the mortgage quickly.
We had 4 holidays last year, Egypt was free (via Clubcard Deals), New York (£141 return), Miami (£230 return) and UK Forest Holiday (£120) were found by searching HotUKDeals and other bargain sites and paid for from the money we set aside each month for the holiday savings account.
The better the deal the further the money goes and the more holidays we can have.
We both have Tesco Clubcards and credit cards and use them all the time, which usually guarantees us one free holiday a year.
So far this year we have enough Clubcard points to book a holiday abroad with Airmiles, and the holiday savings account money has yet to be touched.
In fact my OH only came on board fully in May last year while he spent a month off work recovering from an operation, and was bored stiff and stuck in bed, so he had a look at the sites that took up my time (he used to mock my interest in being a MFW).
He realised that we could really achieve this goal sooner than planned by making some adjustments that didn't completely restrict our lives.
He's recently agreed to give me another £200 per month (I process all the bill payments for the household).
Money which he would have previously spent on shirts/shoes. He's still got our holiday to Egypt next month to look forward to.0 -
ok. well last night i booked two tickets to watch the Rugby at Twickenham in April (Wasps vs Bath) and staying in the Twickenham Marriott hotel so we can have a few drinks!
Also booked a cottage in the Forrest of Dean for late Feb (Swmbo's birthday) and we can take the dog too!! :j
We also like our holidays. I tend to travel a lot with work so have a good stock of BA miles we can use although we are trying to save them to get us to Australia next year for our 30th birthdays and to see some friends that moved out there too!
Think i will get myself a tesco credit card soon! i use my card for online purchases but pay it off at the end of the month so the prospect of getting free clubcard points is a appealing!
Anyway, back to the overpaying, i signed up for Quidco last night so will start using that. the plan is to set up this so payments go into our joint account and can then go towards overpayments!MFWannabe2010 #114: Target £40,000 for 2010

You will feel so much better when you can balance the need to be mortgage free with enjoying your lives.
You won't look back when you sign up for Quidco and it may change the way you shop forever.0 -
Just had our annual statement from Nationwide and realise that if I make the target to pay off everything by the end of July we will have paid it off a year before our current deal ends (we had a 5 yr fix at 4.94%) and even better 5 whole years before the original mortgage was due to end! I really want to achieve this even though I am feeling fed up with work and would like to leave/find something else. I know it's not sensible in the current economic climate and might mean not achieving my dream - so I am hanging on in there. You folks help me keep going - thanks!

Hi everybody,
Well I've posted a cheque off to the mortgage people for the amount of 260.00. This is actually my council tax for Feb and March, I figured I might as well send it now whilst it's just sat in the bank.
So what with my previous overpayment this month, my total overpayments for
January are 424.55.
The thing that is keeping me motivated is to pay as much as possible whilst the interest rate is so low and it has a bigger effect.
Incidentally I like the idea of colouring in boxes so that I've got a visual reminder of my challenge. Thanks for that one.
Toodles0
