i know a few that would love to just have the ring.....
just make sure that she is really worth it.

In fairness the OP states 'potential engagement ring', does not state if they will be the bearer of said ring to suitor :p...only the potential of it being an engagement ring, in the making.

I'd personally not like it but then I made very sure my now hubby knew what style/kind of ring I would like :) I like VERY simple designs that aren't too raised from the finger

I also dislike rings that are raised from the finger with a Tiffany style setting and hence didn't choose an emerald cut purely for this reason since they need to be raised.

Additionally, I would much rather have the 3 stone style as opposed to one main stone with small side stones. Alternatively, I'd rather have the 0.4 carat side stones added to make a larger single emerald, although I know that will be much more expensive!

An engagement ring is supposed to be worn for the rest of one's life. Most women have clear ideas as to what they do and don't like in this matter, so I would step on the side of caution if there is any doubt as to whether this is someone's dream ring or not. Some people will say it doesn't need to be her dream ring. I think if you're spending a lot of money (which I appreciate not everyone does), it should be!

I have a close friend whose husband proposed with a single emerald diamond stone set in a platinum ring. It is an extremely high quality stone; a very expensive ring. It is the most expensive item of jewellery she is ever likely to have (her watch is a Rolex fyi), yet she doesn't love it. It isn't her dream ring, although obviously she loves what it symbolises. He proposed with it and said she could change it if she liked. She felt obligated to keep it; I can understand that. Women are generally too emotional and could not change a ring they were proposed to with, even though it might not be what they would have really loved. Tricky.

The ring is stunning :) if that were me given it by my boyfriend I would accept it,no questions asked as its the thought that counts.

I tend to agree with MrsTine & LunarEclipse about woman being particular about what ring styles they like and what gems are in them.

Looking at one of the diamond websites that sell loose stones (see the link in my earlier post) the OP may possibly be paying in excess of £3K for the single stone, with the cost of the .4 carat diamonds in the shoulder and platinum on top.

Although I appreciate the romance of a surprise proposal with a ring that the guy may have chosen, it may well be that she doesn't like the ring - that would be such a shame.

Like lunar eclipse, I'd prefer to have a slightly bigger single stone than have numerous small diamonds (from looking at the ring, there's at least 10 on each side so .4 carat will be .02 carat each, which is pretty small).
Having small fingers, I'd also find it quite uncomfortable to have diamods down the shank.

The OP has posted this twice, other opinions here:

Wow, that is absolutely gorgeous, although I do think that the diamonds down both sides so far down could rub against other fingers and cause a lot of pain if she's slim-fingered

I do hope she likes it. I must be the only person on this thread who would have wanted to be asked, if it was destined for me, whether I liked it or not. If somebody gave me a ring I hated, I wouldn't want to wear it, no matter how much it cost. Just imagine how difficult it would be to say to somebody who had put a lot of thought into a gift that you hated it. Especially if you were expected to wear it for the rest of your life.
  • I've just looked at this ring again and decided I intensely dislike it.

It's a combination of timeless elegance (emerald diamond with platinum) ruined by the small, cheaply cut shoulder diamonds that bring the whole quality of the ring down, in my opinion. Can't get Argos out of my head and I know that's not the level of quality you're going for with your diamond spec.

It also screams 'American' in its design.

I agree Lunar - I like simplicity and my ring only has one stone - a teardrop or pear shape stone - set in a 3 claw off set band - I tried finding a picture online to post on here but can't find one like it :) I've only ever seen it sold at Biaggios though... hubby knew I liked the off set setting with a single stone and when he saw the tear drop stone in that setting he KNEW that it was THE ring... Only time it's been off since he gave it to me was when I was pregnant and my fingers swelled up lol I was paranoid that one day they might insist on cutting my ring to get it off my finger!!!

The ring isn't as important as the feeling and thought it represents, and judging by you going to this trouble to find out opinions about it, and the detail of the ring itself...you have the big part right even if the ring sucks :rotfl:

    It doesn't BTW, it's beautiful craftsmanship...practical I wouldn't know as I'm male.

    Good luck.

I have to add my tuppence - I took one look at it and thought 'well that's not very MSE, it'll catch on her tights all the time':money::rotfl:

But maybe that's because I prefer yellow gold, I always think platinum and white gold look a bit cheap - I don't know why, maybe because they're a colder colour like silver.:p

I'm only saying this because while I do think it's important to have a ring to propose with, it should be one from a sweet shop or Argos, then let the lady who will be wearing it be part of the decision on what style to buy.

Top tip for getting the right size of ring in advance - get her old wedding ring, take it to the jeweller and they'll size it for you.
Just kidding - ring sizes are hard to find, because your fingers are not the same size hand to hand, and most umarried women don't have rings to fit their left ring finger. Another reason to tread carefully - resized rings don't hold their stones as well as the original sized one does.

Good Luck - hope she says yes whatever you propose with.:D
