It's for a friend, I've tried to tell him AVG or Avast are just as good but he's having none of it.
Talked him out of Norton but not sure what to recommend as I've always used free ones.
Any recommendations?

Ive allways used Zone Alarm With Antivirus, It costs about £18 a year, very good program, uses little resources, and ive found it to be a lot better then many of the popular brands
Thanks Tom :-)0 -
well if he will insist on throwing his money away....
I'd recommend Antivir
never used it myself (I'm an avast man personally) but I've heard good things all over."If you really want to hurt your parents and you don't have nerve enough to be homosexual, the least you can do is go into the arts."0 -

I did a trawl of lots of web sites and bought BitDefender on the strength of those. No complaints so far - at least it doesn't conflict with everything like N****N !!!!0

I'd second that. Great program, I've been using it for ages. By the way it's free if you're a home user, you only pay for it if you're a business.0 -

Nod32 is quite good and people have recommended it to me. It seems to work quite well but since I do not have the money at the moment I use AVG free which is quite good!
I read somewhere that having a layered defense with many free programmes can give quite decent protection
I would advice your friend to use the following:
1.)AVG free
2.)Zonealarm Free
3.)Spybot
4.)Adaware Free
5.)Spyware Blaster
6.)Win Patrol
Also use Firefox or Opera web browsers whenever possible!0 -
I use Nod32 on my main PC, very good, fast and small, also does well in most tests.
I got mine from the US site and got it cheaper than from the UK site no VAT etc, if I remember it was $39 which is about £20 - not bad for a number one product
On my other pc's I run Avast, which is free.
I used to use F-prot, very fast and used to be free, for the free version there are scripts available to help get updates regularly rather than having to manually download them.0 -
i recomend kaspersky, nod32, bit defender or f-secure ... those are the ones i'l go for (in order of prefrence)... nod32 and kaspersky use the least system resources, BD uses a little more than the previous two, not sure about f-secure. nevertheless, all GREAT AVs!... shouldnt have any problems with any of the above. i recomend you go onto their sites first and try their trial versions before making a purchace.
currently i use Kaspersky AND NOD32 simultaneously on my PC.... works a charm!... havent had any problems and makes the greatest combination... KAV's features and detection rates + NOD32's Hercustics. both light on resources.. had to configure them a little, but works great!0
