So "extra filtering" is just adding convenience, because the milk will store longer in the fridge. Nothing else?

That's the way I see it.

As I said above, ordinary pasteurised milk from the supermarket lasts happily for more than a week (routinely has use-by date of 10 days + ), so I don't see the point.
Skimmed + semi-skimmed milk freezes hapily too, if you need to store longer .

I agree with that. I live on my own and don't use a lot of milk, but I buy 4 pint bottles from Iceland for £1 (just gone up to £1.10). I decant the milk into 4 x 1 pint bottles and freeze 3 of them.

I noticed that if I go away and leave milk in the fridge for about a week, it goes sour. Yet if I'm at home I can keep it for a week and it doesn't go sour. I've concluded that if it's stirred/agitated by frequently taking it out of the fridge and putting it back, it seems to prolong it's life somehwat.

Well a lot of people seem to think it tastes better. I've never tried it myself so can't comment.

It certainly tastes different (tried the Cravendale when it was on a promotional offer), altho we (DH and I agree) don't think the taste is necessarily better. It seems to be sweeter, which makes it quite unpleasant in tea.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

  • I ran out of milk and the corner shop had no semi, I had to get full fat. This could be a really stupid question but if I water it down will it taste like semi and have the lower fat content of semi?

FWIW I noticed yesterday that Aldi have started selling filtered milk, IIRC it was £1.29 for 2L.

My nearest Aldi is in London, but thank you anyway.

The fat content won't change because you aren't actually taking anything out.. although because its watered down and will go further you will actually be getting less fat IYSWIM... my guess is if you water it down enough it'll taste like semi...

EDIT: I don't think semi actually tastes that much different to full fat.. but I always use skimmed and that does taste different..

This is what I'm hoping, it'll taste like semi, not watery full fat :rotfl:

i have semi skimmed, cant cope with full fat in tea or on cereal, it completely changes the taste of tea. Too creamy for me.
Strangely enough though, i dont mind it in the odd coffee i have.

If you dont like it you can always make some custard with it tomorrow.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
