Years ago I used to be able to tate the difference between co-op and dairy crest milk, but that was back in the days when everyone had their milk delivered to the doorstep (when the cream used to be in liquid form at the top of the bottle, rather than the lump that you get nowadays )

Milk nowadays is often homogenized to make it last longer (which is why it lasts about a week now).

I get my (non-homogenised) milk direct from my local farmshop, it comes into the shop with an 8 day "life" on the containers - shows how "old" supermarket milk can be !

Homogenisation also helps to overcome a side effect of pasteurisation which can cause layers to form at the bottom of the milk.

I grew up living in the rural peak district, and every day we got a delivery of fresh RAW (unpasteurised) milk. Of course it was whole milk, as it came from the cow (except cooled). It was lovely, I can't describe how much better than the modern milk it tasted. And pouring the cream off the top for our strawberries in the summer .....Mmmmmmmm.

I wish we could buy the same now. Is it legal to sell unpasteurised milk now??
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

So shops can't sell it, but presumably I could buy it straight from a farm (if there were any dairy farms round here).

    That's an interesting article, Thanks.

80p per litre (4 pints) compared to Tesco 67p per litre.

Sorry if someone else has already said this, but 1 litre does not equal 4 pints!!! 1 pint = 568ml so 1 litre = >2 pints.

Unless I have misunderstood your post, in which case I apologise.

Typical Government "nannying" as usual ! Can't buy green milk because there is a miniscule risk that you might catch Listeria (or Listerine ?) but you can buy booze and fags which kills hundreds of thousands every year.

Perhaps if they they put large taxes on milk you would be allowed to buy it then ??

I tasted fresh milk, warm and straight from the cow some years ago at a friend's parents' farm. It was really nice. Then they served some that had been refridgerated. I don't usually drink milk because I don't like the taste, but that was just delicious!

Ilona each to their own I suppose, but I really don't fancy the sound of warm milk fresh from the cow's udders lol:eek:

Warm goat's milk froths up your tea. Just thought you might like to know.

What an interesting thread this has turned out to be, some great links too!
