My OH has in the past done agency driving for Dairy Crest and lots of the same milk goes out under different lables and in the same truck.
What happens to it when it is delivered though can be very different! IN some stores he has dropped a load of first thing and come back later in the day with a second load to find the first lot still standing outside in the sunshine!
  • Second paragraph: does Waitrose pay more to its suppliers than the other supermarkets? I have no idea but am just curious. Cos if they do, I'd say it's a very good reason for paying a bit more (if you can afford it).

Waitrose website says they do pay suppliers more BUT they reckon that this doesn't reflect in their price..

    Hmmmm!!!

Well I quite like the idea of just adding Tesco milk into the Waitrose bottle.. just have to make sure the label says it is still in date!!!

We still have a doorstep delivery (if you think Waitrose is expensive....) but from time to time we run out and have to nip down to the local supermarket (Tesco).
We only ever have skimmed milk and TBH I've never thought to even consider a difference and I've certainly never been aware of one
The only thing that is constant is change.

I drink semi skimmed, and have never noticed any difference in the different supermarket brands (I use farmfoods, iceland, occasionally tesco, asda, poundland and wiseman brand milk). The 1% milk does taste very slightly different but no worse.

I must admit though that cravendale which I have occasionally bought when it is on offer tastes much better and lasts longer - it really is nice! But then I don't like cream or full fat milk, so I think that's why I really like the cleaner taste of the cravendale.
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.
  • I only drink skimmed and buy it from Tesco or Iceland, never noticed a difference. I buy the kids organic milk as it is a lot better for you but i can't forgot to buy that for me and OH especially as Tesco only do organic skimmed in 2 pinters  Me and OH tried cravendale once and it was foul, beginning to think though that maybe it was off as everyone else seems to say how nice it is

A few observations. I buy semi-skimmed. Organic semi-skimmed is all I will buy because it definitely tastes better than non-organic. I do find that with most organic food I can't tell the difference but milk is an exception.

Waitrose's own label organic semi-skimmed is not homogonised. There is a 'cream' at the top of the bottle although not as thick as you'd get with full fat. It's superior to other supermarket's semi skimmed in taste but I don't buy it regularly because there is not a Waitrose nearby.

I do miss the easy availability of milk in glass bottles because it tastes so much nicer.

This may be because it isn't homogenized. Milk nowadays is often homogenized to make it last longer (which is why it lasts about a week now).

Trouble with homogenization is it makes the fat molecules smaller.

normally i'd say tastewise milk is milk but cravendale is def a few steps above. however they don't pasteurise instead they use a complex filtering system instead, it def tastes creamier but i'm not sure if it's homoginised or not, regardless on the rare occassions i buy fresh milk (normally use uht which tastes creamier to me and can be bought in bulk for the store cupboard) i like to get cravendale, i see it as a treat

I drank fresh milk only once in my life. Still warm from the cow. Never again.. I did like milk that could go sour rather than go off though. Those were the days...

I never thought there would be a difference between the milks, though I never buy a brand I don't recognise

Sound like we should give cravendale a go.

Cravendale has a slightly sweeter taste, I find it similar to the milk you buy in Germany. It's quite nice to drink as milk, OK in coffee, but I find it odd in tea.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)
