milk can taste different depending on what the cows have been eating, also organic milk tastes different though it's difficult to define what that difference is, closest I can get is that it's 'sweeter' somehow

one that's easily spotted though is turnipy milk in winter

Bear in mind that unless you are buying from a single farm, the milk you are sold in a shop has been collected by tanker from countless farms, before it is all mixed together then processed.

Anyone who can taste a difference between the supermarket shelf 'regular' brands of bog-standard milk has a pretty fertile imagination, IMO.

Just sounds like being snobbish to me. Likewise milk is milk!

Waitrose charge more because they can get away with it. Wonder how much M&S Milk is?!
Agree with the first paragraph here.

Second paragraph: does Waitrose pay more to its suppliers than the other supermarkets? I have no idea but am just curious. Cos if they do, I'd say it's a very good reason for paying a bit more (if you can afford it).

I buy milk from which ever shop I'm doing the shopping in and never noticed the difference.

Sainsbury's semi skimmed tastes just like Morrisons.

  • I work for Martin's and we get people coming in paying a fortune for the milk because they say it tastes the best!

I remember fighting over the 1 bottle of gold top we used to have delivered on a Saturday, so creamy, always used to look forward to Sunday's pud. That was 40 years ago though ............

The reason I ask is because I have a relative who refuses to drink Tesco milk because they claim it is horrible and they will only drink Waitrose milk.

I only drink skimmed milk, and find sainsburys and M & S to be nicer than the tesco and asda versions. Tesco is my closest supermarket so i'll still buy it on occasion though if i have to. Cravendale skimmed is my favourite though:D

Exactly. And the bulk pasteurised milk has the fat taken out and then put back in in varying amounts before homogenisation, hence why they can accurately put '0.1%/3% fat' etc on the bottle.
  • Have you tried pouring the other milk into a Waitrose bottle and seeing if he can tell the difference? ;)
They may have really sensitive taste buds and its always poss that maybe Waitrose cows are better cared for so make 'happier' nicer-tasting milk?

The only difference may be from an animal welfare point of view. I saw recently that some cows are kept in milking sheds & do not go outside - rather like battery hens. That may affect the milk taste?

That made me switch to organic - I am happy to pay the extra for a happier cow!!
