On. Life is too short to be sitting around in the cold, wrapped in blankets to save an extra £1 a day.

wish I had £30 a month to spend on heating, fact is I dont. I dont go as far as wrapping myself in blankets, but I see nothing wrong with wearing layers to keep warm over spending a load of cash on heating.

Last year and the year before, based on my winter usage of gas, if I use my central heating for 3 hours a day every day it usually cost me about £70 a month for that in gas bills.

Not to mention keeping my flat warm is diffilcult anyway, there is loads of insulation issues and poor radiators.

It seems we all have different points of acceptance of heat, someone posted here they used their heating in september (was a hot september this year), my sister I believe actually used hers at the end of august, in august I wasnt even wearing a t shirt and covered in sweat at 3am.

Right now it is noticebly colder than last week but I am still only in a t shirt and occasionally putting on a jacket, but no jumper yet so certianly not winter temperatures yet. It seems silly for all the people on here going to loads of effort to find the cheapest electric/gas get cashback etc. and then waste money on heating when they could just put an extra layer of clothing on.

Totally agree. My heating is on a thermostat year round, if the house gets cold, the heating comes on.

My Nan is one of those people that won't heat the house until she feels cold. She gets ill all the time and the house stinks of damp. What's the point in trying to save a few quid if you have to put up with that?

for me its not a few quid. The last time I used my heating regurly, not only was there not a lot of difference in temperature but I also had a £240 gas quarterly bill which I was not best pleased about.

This year I will use heating at some point but it wont be until it feels freezing when I am layered up. Also may use electric heating only this year I am not sure yet, electric heaters 100% efficient and since I live on my own I only need to heat the room I am in.

When it's -8c outside - that's when I turn the heating on. Otherwise I don't bother. I have warm jumpers, a hot-water-bottle and an electric blanket.

I've never understood the mentality of people who want to blast their house like a furnace and wear t-shirts when it's +10c outside.
I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

Had the heating on for an hour this morning for the kids getting up for school as we had a touch of frost.
But now it is raining again so probably wont need it on tonight.

I dont think really that many people who are well would hav
e there houses like a furnace at + 10 , we are both disabled so we have to keep the heating on at a reasonable temp of 20 degrees during the day. Even if I wasnt disabled I wouldnt fancy being in doors at - 8 !! to me thats not a comfortable temperature:eek:

how much does it roughly cost per day to have the heating on approx 3-4 hours, 3 radiators on thermostat, combi boiler. no cavity wall insulation yet (3 weeks time) double glazing.
FTB just not long moved so dont get a bill until 10th december.

How long is a piece of string?

There are too many variables for example:
    1. Room size
    2. Ceiling size in the room
    3. How large the windows are and whether they are double glazed
    4. How old and efficient your boiler is

I currently live in a 2 bedroom flat with low ceilings, a condensing combi boiler and radiators that I are on in every room (5) when the heating comes on. Last year my heating bill for winter was £60. That included the time when it snowed and the heating was on for nearly 24 hours a day.

I grew up in a Victorian houses when I was young and in one of them the pipes burst because they froze over night since then if the weather looks like it's heading under 0 degrees the heating stays on low.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

I put it on 30 mins before we get up, to switch off 30 mins after were up, then at night 30 mins before we all come in, then again 30-60 mins while were in - sounds complicated, but its all on a timer!
Recently the weather has been mild so will over-ride the timer for the evening as house & floors well insulated so house retains heat, HTH :)
No one said it was gonna be easy!

just to add another point of view, i cant believe someone on here had their heating on in september, we went camping for 2 weeks so obviously no heat at all and outside and we were all fine.

as for heating the house i would rather use a duvet on the sofa and an electric blanket on the bed than pay lots to the energy companies !

When I'm up tonight after a hard day, and watching Later and Medium, I'll have a hot water bottle as it's cold outside. I wouldn't consider putting the central heating on. Not even if I was ill.
