OS Daily Thread - Monday 2nd November

Hi there! This is the Daily Thread for Monday 2nd November. It is an 'Over the garden fence' type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
Please do not start a new Daily Thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two Dailys' live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new Daily Thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “Hi everyone, hope you are all well” type start is just as good.
Morning OS friends,
Jayne - So glad your sister is with you for the next few days.
Noahs - I would have quoted your post but for the sake of taking up room, I would just like to say I agreed with everything you said about the X factor. I only watch it on the repeat though as I am a SCD girl through and through!
Bitsy - copy and paste love, copy and paste....
cuddlymarm - Good to see you posting and getting organised. Can I sound terribly stupid and ask what OR and BR mean please?
Curly - Awww that is so cute!
Pippa - Tris has refused the operation. There is a real danger he might not wake up if he has it but obviously his health will not improve if he doesn't have it... Anyway, right now he is saying no.
Haribo - I was just about to pm you and you popped up. Glad to see you posting again.
Candygirl - good luck at the gym hon
Bargainbird - glad you are enjoying the smilie link I posted. :rotfl:
Ok, well I know growing mushrooms is really easy with these mushroom kits but I am so proud of how ours has done. Lots of ready to cook ones with plenty of tiny baby ones underneath too. I am sad enough to have put together a slideshow HERE. The final pic is our (rather over-cooked but delicious anyway) mushrooms, looking rather squished!
My OS-iness today will be more tidying of the crate of stuff that seems to have accumulated lately and to write a letter to my dad just to say how nice it was to see him. I might knock up a card if I can think of something simple.
Lunch will be turkey and salad sandwiches and dinner the left over beef from the roast. I fancy making a beef and mushroom pie, but it will depend on what my OH is up to.
I hope you all have a good start to the week. With love, light and
for everyone who would like one.

Morning, Diva - I've just noticed your sig. My favourite Voltaire quote is 'the thing about common sense is that it's not very common'! I come across situations every day that make me think about that one! Your mushrooms look fantastic - well done!
Jayne - how lovely to have your sister with you. (((Hugs))) to you and George.
Well, it's raining here as well as in the UK. Seems we're sharing the same band of weather at the moment.
DH had another appointment at the hospital and a bit more treatment on his finger, so he's under orders not to do any serious DIY for the rest of this week; suits me fine because I could do with a break from helping with it!
Today, hopefully, I shall be making some of the biscuits from a recipe that was posted in the Down to Earth forum - it uses condensed milk and just three other ingredients, so looks cheap and easy. I shall find it and post a link on here when I've finished this post.
Dinner today is undecided as yet because I need to go shopping!
Anyway, I'll try and keep up with you all today.
Have a great day, everyone.
KathyXX
I've copied and pasted the recipe for those who aren't registered on Down to Earth's blog:
I bake all our biscuits, cakes and bread, so I am always on the lookout for recipes which are quick and easy. I thought I would share one of my favourite biscuit (cookie) recipes. It is easy, quick, cheap and it makes 7 or 8 dozen biscuits, which keep well. The dough and cooked biscuits keep well in the freezer. I use butter and wholemeal flour, but white flour and margerine can be substituted. I have only ever used tinned sweetened condensed milk in this recipe, but i imagine that Rhonda Jean's homemade condensed milk would work just as well.
makes 7-8 dozen, cook 10 min at 180C
500 grams butter (approx 1.1 lb)
1 can condensed milk (390-400 gram)
1 cup sugar
5 cups wholemeal self raising flour (or plain flour and paking powder)
toppings like choc chips, smarties, jam, cinnamon and sugar
cream butter and sugar, add condensed milk. stir in flour. roll into balls and flatten. top with choc chips etc, or thumbprint and add jam for jam drops.
bake at 180C for approx 10 min until golden brown. cool on racksKNIT YOUR SQUARE TOTALS:

Hi Mioliere! - Those biscuits sounded good but I could hear my teeth falling out from the sugar overload.. I LOVE condensed milk though and have been known to eat it straight from a tin.
I put the Voltaire quote in about two months ago when SCD started as it reminded me of it. I like the quote you mentioned too and have used that in my life a few times!
We have been lucky with the weather in my part of Devon. It has been pouring down the last two nights but blowy and fresh during the day. Even my sheets dried on the line yesterday.

Morning, MSD and Mioliere, and all who follow. Another early start here, but off to catch the bus in a mo for work, so will brave the cold! Not too keen on Mondays, but at least it means I'm a bit closer to my day off
Tea tonight will be leftover chilli from the freezer put through pasta, and I'm feeling a renewed sense of OSiness in a money saving way. I love it when I get like that, because I don't go out and buy new stuff in order to help me do more OSly things, I get a bit more patient and just plot. And the plotting means I don't go shopping in the meantime. True, we do need bread and milk, but I think I can handle buying those without picking up too much other stuff.
Anyway, have a good day everyone (((hugs)))

Morning everyone.
Haven't even looked out of the window to peek at the weather. Can't hear any wind etc so I presume it's much calmer than yesterday
Got a busy day planned. I have to take DS to get his eyes tested (my mum will take DD food shopping with her) and I've written a list as long as my arm of jobs to get done  Mostly cleaning but it does help me focus on what needs doing. We cleared some clutter from our bedroom yesterday. there was a load of stuff we were saving for a car boot but TBH we're not going to have the time so off to the charity bin it went instead. I've kept some stuff that I will try and ebay but things like some books I had have gone to charity.
I've got leek and potato soup in SC for lunch. Just boiled some country soup mix and added that in too, hope that cooks by lunchtime......
Diva - your mushrooms are fab. where did you get the kit from and where did you keep it? I ask because my mum had a kit from B&Q which was rubbish, didn't grow a thing.
mioliere - 7-8 DOZEN biscuits  I could never bake that many I'd end up eating them all
Not read yesterdays thread so hugs to those that need them.

Good morning chums ,still dry at the moment here.My DGD is coming for breakfast this morning as she starts her placement at the local primary school this morning. She is doing a college course to do with children in education over the next two years and has to do Mondays and Fridays at the local school.Three of my DGS go there so they will be suprised this morning to see their cousin at school.
My other DGD their sister, has got a placement at a different school, also local, as she is also doing the same course.
NSD for me today as I have enough to last me at least a week if not longer.
Still a bit snuffly with the cold but am dosing myself up and will hopefully avoid the worst of it.I must phone the MLD massage chap this morning to get booked in for the massage course for my arm,I received a cheque from the macmillan trust towards the costs. Its around £45 per hour,if I lived down in Sittingbourne which is about 5 miles away it wouldn't cost anything but my PCT won't fund it even though the breast care clinic recommend it.Daft this post-code lottery isn't it.Talking of post I am waiting for a delivery from Lakeland ,my friend and I were in there last week, and she said that the mould remover for bath trims was well worth getting as it really works (just under a fiver) so I ordered it am am hoping it will arrive sometime this week.I got the 'We'll eat again' cookery book from the library last week and I must say I don't miss the war-time recipes that my poor old Mum had to make. I remember a lot of them and its a wonder I still eat oats anymore. Well time to get the kettle on. Have a good day everyone whatever you are doing

Morning all,
Its stopped raining here for a while, but we are due more tonight and tomorrow, I hope no one here is affected by the flodding.
DD back to school today, so i can get back into a routine, lots to do today, go through whole house, mop and hoover, baking, washing and shopping, as well as phone calls to the EA and solicitor, that should keep me busy
Smoky, I meant to say I hoover every day too, the mixture of a black and white kitchen floor and little dog mean I have too .
Pie mash and cauli brocoli cheese for tea tonight, I must try to empty the freezer, trouble is I keep making extra, and shoving it in there.
Will hopefully get some washing dry today, before the rain, its also meant to be getting colder here this week, no heating on here yet, I remember last year it was very cold at this time.
Jayne, glad your sister is here to help you through tomorrow xx
Have good days all xx0 -
Aaargh! First day back at work/school and already I'm stressed!
DD knows the rule is any homework has to be printed out the night before. So she has just come down and printed out her science homework (one night without telly) and burst into tears because her computer froze halfway through her English homework and she didn't have time to reboot the computer before going for the bus so she only has half her English homework to hand in (second night without telly). I confess to shouting at her - she has only had the whole of half term week to do it, after all!!!0 -

I think you and I may have the same dd  mine has detention after school wed for being late with homework, and there was no computer for 2 nights when I found out0 -

We've had porridge and fruit for breakfast.
Lunchboxes have cheese rolls, apples, clementines and coconut-pineapple-white choc chip muffins.
I shall have leftover barley broth.
Supper will be pumpkin and red bean curry with brown rice. Must cook the beans today. I've soaked a whole packet and will freeze the rest.
Must also bake bread when I get back from Waitrose.
I've a mountain of laundry which I can't start until I've bought washing powder.0
