Enormous congratulations to Boo, Mr Boo & baby boy Boo! Hope you are all well & can't wait to hear birth story & see pics of the little fella :D

EA you have me worried now, I don't even know what labour ward I'll be on never mind when I should be going to look around!!!! Can't wait to see the midwife next week as I've a whole a4 page full of questions for her! Hope you're enjoying your time off with OH this week :)

Hope all's going well this morning PP, lots of wriggly baby vibes, xx

Really hope GISI has her baby in her arms now :)

Som hope you're feeling a bit better this morning? & thanks for all the sling advice :D

SJ hope the bath eased the backache a bit :)

Aless glad you asked about sheets, OH's sis has a 7 month old and said her only real advice was to get loads of moses basket sheets, as she would change every time baby puked. I was saying to OH surely we could get around this by putting a muslin/pillow case folded over at the top when baby is tiny, so they puke on there rather than the sheet? Dunno how practical it is, but I'm sure someone on here once suggested it?! We've got 2 at the minute which I'm debating about adding to? Whilst on the subject, how many cot sheets would people suggest?

Anyone know, regards the £250 the government give when baby is born, does it have to be invested in a 'trust fund', as opposed to a normal savings account? I'm presuming the answer's yes! Also, the standard £20 odd a week you get (is it child benefit?), at what point do you apply for this? And does it need to be paid into the mothers account, or can it go into the fathers? Sorry for all the Qs, hoping you all might save me the leg work of doing any research into it :p:o
    Baby Boy arrived March 25th 2010 - 17 days late & 8lb 10oz :j

Yes, it has to go in a government approved trust fund. You will get a welcome pack that details which providers are approved and you just pick one. £50 cash back on Quidco for one of them so remember to check that out first. (Alliance Mutal I think)

Child benefit: You will receive your claim pack in the Bounty pack you will be given in the hospital. You can apply as soon as baby is registered cos you need birth certificate for this.
When claiming child benefit make sure you understand that whichever parent makes the claim will receive some kind of home protection for National Insurance contributions (can't remember what its called), meaning that if a SAHM is not working for a number of years, NI stamp is still being paid for pension etc. However I do beleive it can be paid into any account just be sure to get the name of the CLAIMING parent right. Does that make sense??

Fattybooboo (Mr & Mrs :p) - congrats on your new baby boy!! :j :j thanks so much for letting us know. Hope to see photos soon! I'm sure my hubby will be doing the exact same thing from his Blackberry in the hospital :p

Fernlie/Fitzio/Gym, etc. - thanks for responding! That's a good point about the washer being going all the time with washable nappies, I hadn't thought of that! Cuts down on the amount of 'stuff' I need full stop, really, since I will be doing laundry v often. Also, do I really NEED pram sheets?? I swear I've never actually seen anyone using them but maybe I haven't been looking close enough.

EA - don't worry it's not going to hurt anything to wait on the labour ward tour! When we went on ours (at around 30ish wks), there were loads of women there who looked like they were 36+ weeks so obviously left it quite late!

gym - the child benefit can be applied for by either mother or father, it doesn't matter. You can't apply until after baby's born, but the 1st payment will be backdated from birth.

Regarding Trust funds actually, there was something about this on the telly-box last week. Basically your child gets the Trust fund on 18th birthday, the parent will have no control over the account on the childs 18th birthday. Not nice to think about but basically if you have been putting money into the Trust fund every month for the childs future to build up a wee egg nest and theres about 5k in there on 18th birthday, the child will have full control over this. If your child has gone off the rails abit be aware that all your savings for them could be spent on drink and drugs!! Far safer to put the £250 in Trust fund and leave that for child, then, have a separate savings account that you can keep control over until you think your child can spend the money wisely!

See my post above, it really does matter who CLAIMS, it doesn't matter whos account the money gets PAID into tho.

I'll see if I can find anything about the Home protection thingy.

    Not long now Aless!

Ah, fair enough! I don't know much about it TBH - we have no choice since my visa doesn't allow me to claim, so DH has to :).

Aless: about the sheets and stuff, I only have 3 that fit the crib and I'm managing fine with that amount. I've got 2 pram sheets that you will need, but won't notice! If you have a large pram, it might be better to get flat sheets rather than fitted, as the fitted ones are quite small. Blankets: I have 3 on his bed at night, 2 soft blankets (1 in wash, 1 in use) for using during the day if hes cold in his bouncy chair or whatever and a big shawl that I use for a blanket when hes out in his pram.

Thanks CSH & Aless that's brilliant. I was planning to claim but pay into OHs account, so glad I can do that :D Had me wondering as my mum received a letter the other day about paying NI contributions to entitle her to state pension, and she mentioned she thought this wasn't necessary as she still gets CB for my little sis, so thank you for explaining, will pass the info on to mum too so she's armed when she rings them up :D

Interestingly CSH we had this conv. with OH's sis as she's saving into the trust fund for her daughter, where I said I wouldn't. We're saving all that we're given for him at the moment into a joint savings account of our own, and plan to do the same with the child benefit money, so the money will always be ours til the day we decide he needs it for education/house/car etc.
