well, research has lead me to believe that I need a domain name and a host and then worry about the web design at a slightly later date. I don't need lots of space so it's a basic package. I don't want to spend very much money and all I really need to do is show images and a page of contact details :D

any tips? someone on the techie board has recommended some hosting companies that can sort out the domain etc for me.

I got my names from nominet.

I'd say to be highest in your google ranking, choose a domain name that 'does what it says on the tin' the search engine robots are very sesitive to key words used in the domain name.

Also think about your market. If it's a very local endeavour clothnappiesinEdinburgh.co.uk would work well for anyone tapping those things into google. But if you wanted to hit the whole of the uk, then don't put where you're based. A very functional name sounds dull, but noone really looks at the domain name when searching for an established brand. B and q adopted a similar strategy when they chose diy.com as their name. This means they get high ranking on any DIY related search, not just ones with their name in. The domain name doesn't even need to appear on your home page, you can have a creative title there.

    Just my thoughts :)

emlou, I had a suspicion you were a handcoder from your /rant] joke syntax :D

  • Feeling a bit sad today. Got a text from my Mum today which made me cry. Toby was a bit fussy this morning too, but bread and apple cheered him up. I hope a Chinese will cheer me up too. Think I will tell my Mum how I feel when she gets back, ask her what she thinks I should do about adoption, medication etc.
    .

I take it you are planning to get OH adopted as he seems to be causing you the problems not the gorgeous little Toby! Feely we're all here for you and I'll find space in our house if you need another place to escape to for a break

feelie, FWIW I genuinely believe that adoption can work for children whose alternative is abuse or neglect. But I also believe that you are guilty of neither. PLEASE HANG IN THERE. You are doing an ace job. :)

Fergie is obviously missing the kids TV I never show him and has taken to avidly watching the microwave. If obstructed he leans sideways out of his high chair to recommence his viewing of 'plate of food gets warmer!' His fave prog :rotfl:
