Ooooops what did I say earlier?

Psp - my two have them and there are quite a few 12 and under games, my looooooove LocoRoco even though it is has age rating of 3 on it... They spend ages on it.. Some other good games are
Daxter age 7, burnout age 3, sonic rivals 1&2 age 7, echochrome age 3, ratchet and clank age 7, worms age 7, patapon 1&2 age 7....theses are some of the ones we have ( I haven't mentioned any older ones!)

my two love their PSPs we chose them over ds's cos there seemed to be sooooo many girly games on the ds and more boy oriented games on PSP like the racing and (maybe not your taste) shooting games.

Sorry - I thought you said yours were playing Call of Duty :o hubby plays that...although not when I am in the house, never mind the kids!!

Hmm - DSS is older than your 2, maybe we are being funny :o He is not a racing game kinda boy though and shooting games are definitely out.

personally, i think the PSP is much more worth it than the DS, cos the PSP will grow with him to a degree IYSWIM. some of the games are 12 rated yes, but he is 10 now, and the console will still have games coming out in two years. even if they werent, he would still be able to buy the games for it for years to come. i do think saying you would only let him play a 12 rated game if you were watching him is a little OTT, but thats just my opinion :o he almost definitely sees much worse than he would see in a 12 game on tv, if not at yours then at his mums/friends/grandparents/playground...

He is 9??? How is only letting him play 12 games when supervised OTT?? I think that is responsible parenting....actually...scrap that...personally, I think it is irresponsible parenting letting him play 12 games when he is 9 but I have been overruled on that one. The joys of being a step-parent!!

Am I the only one that thinks that these games (and films etc) have a rating for a reason?

His mother took him to see Hancock (??) at the cinema which was a 12A - hubby and I watched it at home afterwards and within the first 2 minutes he said !!!!!! (and similar words) 12 times!!! Does he really need to hear that?

    Rant over :o

Edit - all my own opinion and not meant to be anything other than that. I think I am a bit square!!!!

Oh yes, that is what I said:o
Ds1 got the new COD for the PS3.......DH hasn't even had a look in yet, although ds1 is away for 2nts so I'm sure he will get a go then. Ds2 plays it too, although he isn't quite as fanatical about it so will take it or leave it.
Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing is going to get better. It's not.

Oh - well as I said, I think I am a bit out of touch on these things.

Do you not worry about him playing things that are so old? It is a 15 isn't it? Even if you don't take much notice of the ratings that it 6 years older then DS1 and 8 years older than DS2.

Feel free to tell me to b00ger off, I am just interested (and paranoid that I am now a freak LOL)

Edit - please don't think I am being rude....

  • MFD - I personally don't/won't follow age ratings on things. It does depend on the child, and its right to protect them from scary things, but I don't think violence and swearing in games/movies is a problem, if parenting is otherwise responsible.

Anyone played Lesuire Suit Larry? " Larry Laffer, is a balding, dorky, double entendre-speaking, leisure suit-wearing (but still somewhat lovable) "loser" in his 40s. The games follow him as he spends much of his life trying (usually unsuccessfully) to seduce attractive women." I remember playing that as a kid, and watching Twilight Zone, Xfiles and Terminator at 5 or 6. Brother did the same and he is normal so I don't think it is to blame for me crazy.

  • evening all :D

havent read back much, but noticed the talk on games and ages, Jasmine has a few 12 games and Chris played them first to see what they were like and then we let her have them, to be honest there really isnt that much in them that I wouldnt allow, and the odd curse word thats in it, Jasmine knows is naughty and knows better than to ever repeat it. We talked to her about the fact that some of them have things that she isnt allowed to see of hear and no matter how much she askes, she wouldnt be allowed them
Also the older games are kept downstairs, so she has to ask one of us to get it and we know what she is playing, whereas the younger ones are in her room.

That was a very long winded answer to say, in small amounts, I dont really see the harm, there is worse on TV most of the time :o But that is very personal choice for each individual parent to make, and I very well change my mind when she is older and wanting the 18 games

ANYWAY ...... hope you are all well, elle, hope you have packed for your holiday:p and ((hugs)) and kisses to everyone else :kisses3:

i thought he was 10, sorry!
i think its all down to personal taste, and the individual child as well. when i was younger, my parents used to say i wasnt as streetwise as the other kids which i never understood, but i think what they meant was i was quite sheltered compared to them? like when i was 14 i'd never watched a 18 film and went to a sleepover with cider and candyman type films, and it was a whole different world to ribena and PG films i'd previously been allowed to watch, but the other kids had been watching the films and drinking at parties for a while!
i think kids grow up quicker when they have older siblings too, thinking about it most of them had older brothers.

games-wise, back when i was younger games only had a recommendation of age rating, its only recently they've started enforcing it! maybe that is why i think differently about it?

ETA: i cant see anything in a 12 game being particularly terrible :o
ETA again: apart from the odd bit of swearing, and like i said before he will have known about that from the playground for many moons now

  • COD  That and Fifa 10 are hubbys current faves. I'm sure att he start of the game you can select if the really violent level is included (I think that may be the one Sami mentioned)

I have no opinion on the game and kids, I haven't got to cross that bridge for a long time, and like most things, I think alot would depend on the individual child.

MFD i think the only issue when it comes to games is if they think its real .. zoe sees philip play things like gears of war (although doesnt pay attention) but she knows its not real so if its not real, to me, why is it a problem...

the only problem i have is when parents complain about games swearing or whatever but then still buy there 10 year old it ... if you dont like it dont buy for your child .. end ..

sorry if that sounds rude not meant just my opinon :) x
    :)Still searching .....:)
