OH and I went on a year-long Round The World trip a few years ago and I would agree with the point about perhaps getting your wedding dress made abroad. However, in terms of buying stuff along the way, think carefully before you do - we've got bags and bags of bits and pieces we picked up from our trip - cushion covers, laterns, lamp shades, clothes, ornaments, etc that looked fun/funky/cool while we were away and then somehow just end up looking naff when we got home! It's nice to have these bits as souvenirs, but it can be easy to get carried away thinking that travelling stuff is cool, and you could spend a small fortune on it all, and then feel different about it when it's out of context back home.
Ha ha! That sounds so familiar. Luckily we're the kind of people who get overwhelmed by choice, spend an hour in a shop before having an argument and leaving with nothing so we didn't go crazy. I've seen backpackers carrying a full set of bongo drums though!
We did get a couple of things that look naff now like green and gold bedcovers that are completely impractical and don't go with anything in the house! On the first part of our trip I had some really awful clothes like a pink gypsy skirt and purple baggy pants that ran in the wash (cringe) you really need to know what you're doing. It's like finding a needle in a haystack!0 -

Chairs, tables and linens - hopefully £500
Food, wine and service £30 p/h for 80 - £2400
Bar hire - ?
Registry office fees - £500
Bus Hire - ?
Cake/brownies - £120
Photographer (friend) - £500
Flowers (friend) - £200
Band - £500 - or perhaps DJ
Dresses - £600
Suits - £400
Rings - £200
Honeymoon - none after all that spending!!!
Total - £7000(ish):A :heartpuls June 2014 / £2014 in 2014 / £735.97 / 36.5%0 -

Ok - I'm looking at your budgets and have decided that mine is just scary  We've tried to cut it back as much as possible but I've seen the perfect dress on a website and OH has his heart set on his kilt etc. and we both really want the venue that we've seen so help any suggestions on how to cut back on the rest of it. We won't need cars as we'll be getting married and staying over at the place, sis is doing pics, OH mum's friend is making cake, and i was gonna attempt to make invites etc. Can't see anyother way of getting it done cheaper help:eek:0 -
PepPop our budget is £20,011, excluding a wedding dress but including honeymoon, so don't fret! You can only do what feels right to you, and personally I really don't want to hold back on our big day. I know I'd love it no matter what, but might as well have everything we want.Debt January 1st 2018 £96,999.81Met NIM 23/06/2008

I agree, we have got a (relatively) small budget because we don't have very much spare cash. If you want a bigger wedding and you afford it there is no reason at all to hold back - go for it! At the end of the day being MSE is just about getting a good deal on what you buy, whatever level you're spending at.:A :heartpuls June 2014 / £2014 in 2014 / £735.97 / 36.5%0 -

www.kilt-shop-scotland.com is where he's going to go (although i can't get this link to work but it might just be my office pc acting up as usual). Depends on whether you want to hire or buy - but he's getting one made in his own tartan so arround £750 for the full outfit. He wants to be able to keep it to wear afterwards for special occasions so it's not too bad. (you also can't rent one in his tartan so we don't really have a choice )0 -
Tell me about it! My fiance wanted the Irish national tartan, but getting an Irish kilt is near impossible and he keeps being offered Scottish stuff just in green, so hes going for a suit now.Debt January 1st 2018 £96,999.81Met NIM 23/06/2008

Kilts put a whole new spin on things, but they're an investment for a long time to come so I wouldn't count it all as a wedding spend. £750 sounds quite reasonable to me.
And of course, everyone can spend whatever they feel happy to on their wedding day, it's a very personal thing. I wouldn't advise getting massively into debt for it without having a plan to pay it off but we're all on MSE so have our heads switched on :money:The 1,000 Day Challenge:Feb 16, 2016500/30,000
