Since when has it been a crime to have no road tax?
What's the point of having a car if you can't drive it to work?

I thought you had 14 days to sort it and I have always got my cars renewed at the first opportunity after it has expired....

No, the 14 "days of grace" is a driving myth.

Once the tax has expired, it is an offence to take the untaxed vehicle on the road.

To use for social and domestic puropses for one.

I'll ask you again, since when has it been a crime not to have road tax?

That won't help over the offence of "failure to display"!

Actually it's not a myth, but it only applies to being exempt from any further action against you taken by the DVLA. Strictly speaking it is a myth because the DVLA won't take any action unless there is a whole month missing (not just 14 days) so you have all of the first month to get your tax disc renewed as long as you back date it to the start of the month. Even then DVLA don't take any action until the end of the second month period is over. But if you have missed the first month entirely you would have to beg the DVLA to allow you to back date your payment for the whole of the previous month. (This is my understanding)

None of this exempts you from the offence of failing to display. Confused? You will be next week.

If you need to renew vehicle tax or declare a vehicle off-road, you can do it online or by phone. You can legally drive or keep your vehicle on the road while displaying your old tax disc for up to five working days, provided you have applied for a new disc before the old one expires.

See, you can't answer my question because having an untaxed car isn't a "crime".
