now, print it out and put on dashboard too. will this be ok?If you do it online today, at least you will be taxed, but because you did not renew it online yesterday you will not qualify for the 5 (working) days grace, so you could theoretically be booked for 'failing to display', However I don't think any cop would be so harsh and be such a jobsworth. If you get somesort of email print out reciept, you could put that on the dash with a note saying "applied online".
Personally I would drive it today -if I had to- and renew it on Monday, as with the postal strikes, I would not want to have to worry about the tax disc not arriving. You could still tell a white lie and put a note on the dash saying "applied onine" to deter someone giving you a ticket.0 -
It's not legal!
Again you know this, so why ask?0 -

Sorry Wig but that's poor advice. There are thousands of cops and traffic wardens who would report this without a 2nd thought. I found this out when getting done for speeding at 34mph in a 30mph zone. I asked where's the 10% + 2 mph rule? They laughed in my face and spent the next 10 minutes looking for faults with the car because of the question.
Pay it online, once paid print off the receipt and take it with you. You've paid and are taxed from that moment.Pants0 -
IMHO you should have waited and taxed it on Monday. Your car will not be legal until your tax disc arrives and is on display. Anything you do between now and then is just window dressing, literally.0

I thought you had 14 days to sort it and I have always got my cars renewed at the first opportunity after it has expired, this may have been 4-5 days after 1st of the month. Although now very easy to do online.0

The law should be changed so that no crime is committed until there has been a complete month of missing tax.
And when you buy a car with mot, without tax, you can insure it immediately over the phone/internet, but you can't tax it temporarily or otherwise - ( a 3 day temporary tax payment over the phone or internet would be nice) So you are stuck with having to move a car home without tax - a victimless costless crime which should not be an offence.
Since when has it been a crime to have no road tax?

Ok I accept there are some real pricks out there, but how would they know you haven't applied online (BEFORE EXPIRY) and have the 5 days grace?Sorry Wig but that's poor advice. That's bad advice IMHO, you won't be legal until the tax disc has arrived in the post and it is on display, with postal strikes is this really such a good idea? Minimum illegal period would be 2 days Sunday & Monday & the morning of Tuesday (assuming it arrives on Tuesday).Pay it online, once paid print off the receipt and take it with you. You've paid and are taxed from that moment.
Doing it at the PO on Monday.... illegal period limited to just one day (Today - Sunday), guaranteed to be road legal on Monday morning.0
