Does anyone else have an OH who is like this??
Are you also married to my husband? :rotfl:
He was thrilled to see a huge box full of drill bits and screwdrivers this morning, but I wouldn't let him buy it as we've got loads already. He insisted on buying a small box of assorted cable ties instead :rolleyes:Here I go again on my own....0 -

Our husbands must be long lost brothers!! Mine won't part with old screws or battered old wood, 'Just in case he should ever need it'. It drives me mad!! What is even worse is that he buys all the correct tools and bits and bobs he needs, starts a job and NEVER finishes it.

My OH when I first met him was a bit of a nightmare, while I was rather middle of the range - I had enough to get the things I wanted, didn't run up debt beyond my means (had car loans etc) but also didn't save anything significant.
Then OH was made redundant and I found out the extent of his debt and the lack of control over his money. I sat down with him and we worked out a budget and discussed how to stick to it (no takeaways because we couldn't be bothered to cook etc:o ).
Within in 2 months he had taken over the budgeting himself. To make things easier on him I made sure I was tight with my money and as a result cleared all debt and started saving quite a bit. I paid off my last debt in August 2005 and he cleared his in April 2006.
We are now concentrating on saving for our wedding:T
I don't think my OH was more of a spendaholic than me, but I had been used to living on my own, having a mortgage etc and he wasn't. He stopped living at home and had to start paying rent etc but never adjusted his spending accordingly.MFIT No. 810 -

He's quite good at throwing old wood and stuff out, but his Grandad isn't.
My Aunt recently replaced her banisters with spindles and Grandad has kept the old banisters in the garage "just in case". So we're all prepared in case we need an emergency banister :rolleyes:Here I go again on my own....0 -

Oh yes, Rebecca
mine has to buy every gadget going, from 'special' tools for each DIY job we do, to gadgets for work and around the home (HD ready TVs are the latest - we now have three, yes we're ready) to gadgets for hobbies - he got into SCBU diving about 6 years ago and I swear the attraction was all the lovely expensive gadgets he needed to go diving.
We've even got three computers networked around the house, plus two laptops etc etc .... (we even got an old computer or two in the loft, just in case etc....)
I call him 'Gadget Man', they're all the same

Seems like my OH has more than one secret life going on!!!0 -
Thriftylady wrote:its funny you should say that because I would have said the opposite. I know so many women (myself included, before I discovered this site and turned my attitude round) who have run up massive debts on clothes, shoes, haircuts, weekend breaks, generally just living beyond their means. On the other hand, men definitely tend to be 'into' gadgets etc, but because these purchases are one off type things, I've always thought that they think about them a bit more before committing to it. We have a house full of expensive audiovisual equipment, definitely luxury items, but OH researched them for months before committing to buying any of them, to be sure he got the ones which suited us best. He'd probably say that the anticipation and the research is as much fun as actually getting it in the end, and they were bought to satisfy him, not to keep up with anyone else (in fact, he'd say that most people don't appreciate the difference between quality stuff and that which just 'looks the part', but thats a whole other thread!).
maybe its just the people i know ,but the women i know are much better at budgetting than the men and whereas the men would think nothing of going out and buying an expensive piece of " equipment " etc the women wouldnt do so
but then i dont know anyone who goes in for the whole " look at me ,i need to have hair ,nails etc done ,my house (& kids !)has to be immaculate and full of the latest gadgets" thank god id never be able to keep up

when I read back my own post I made myself sound like something out of Footballers Wives, running up massive debts on haircuts !! It maybe didn't come out right, but ultimately I sort of meant the same thing as hobo in that many women feel the pressure to look the part, no matter what, and its easier to justify frittering away £20 here and there than £500 in one go. But, as you say, its no good generalising really !0 -
Lucky you. I know several:rolleyes: . I don't keep up with them though, just smile inwardly when I hear they've done yet another MEW and place a bet with my husband how long it'll be beforeRachie_B wrote:but then i dont know anyone who goes in for the whole " look at me ,i need to have hair ,nails etc done ,my house (& kids !)has to be immaculate and full of the latest gadgets" thank god id never be able to keep up
a) they book another holiday with the money
b) run out of the money they've borrowed before completing whatever project it was that they needed to borrow the money for
c) run up more debts and
d) increased the mortgage again by withdrawing the equity
Currently we are on the 3rd MEW and I'm winning with my estimated time of step a

What's a MEW?spendless wrote:...done yet another MEW
I must admit, I blow money on gadgets. I have more PC's than I can shake a stick at and if it has flashing lights then I feel I gotta have it! If the new version has a new light, OMG I gotta upgrade!
But then as I say to my missus, at least I'm not in the pub spending money chasing other women!
My best mate and his wife are the total opposite of us. He's quite prudent and loves to save, if he wants something he will research it to death before buying. She will happily blow money and keep swiping the credit card. A while back he limited her to a £200 per month "allowance". That was just for her to spend as she wished. She blew that and just started swiping cos her "....debit card wouldn't give her anymore money!". AAARGH!0
