Thank you all again for all your comments. Stupid question of the day - is iplayer the same thing as I have on the pc to watch bbc programmes or am I getting completely mixed up?

Yep it is the same, :D

The PS3 has a built in web browser so you can allso surf the net on your TV,
    even This site:D

(but it is a bit of a faf to use, unless you have a compatible PS3 keyboard, so I still do my surfing on my laptop)
“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”

I find decisions like this really hard as I try to teach the kids to be considerate consumers and not to just want the latest thing because the manufacturers tell them they need it.

I think your kids are considerate already. The PS3 has dropped in price this year compared to last, and has already been out since March 2007.

PS2? Why would you still want the PS2? Why? oh Why?

PS3 is much more superior! Much more! free wireless gaming. Better graphics. HD. Other stuff too.

Yeah, it has everything.....except a decent game library :rotfl:

Unless you're after inferior xbox ports that cost more than the xbox version...

But my ps3 was worth it for the Uncharted series and Demons Souls.

Having both a 360 and ps3, I tend to get my multiplatform games for the 360 as they're usually superior and cheaper and only get exclusives for the ps3.

If you only have the one console, there are plenty of games.

All of your advise has really helped and we are going for the PS3.

We will keep the PS2 for playing the old games so my dilemma now is which model to go for and how much memory will we need:confused:

Gamestation has preowned ones with a year guarantee at 40/60/80 or new slimline ones at 120/250.

There doesn't seem much difference other than the style and the amount of memory. The guy in the shop said you can exchange the hard drive if you want more memory

I understand that some games load onto the machine and then there is downloading - the guy explained that too me but I am still confused on how much we need.

    Any advice please.

    All would 'work'
If you think therell be quite a lot of games bought for it over time then id suggest 120 Gig or above

Personally i would think there is a good possibility that the pre-owned ones could be noisy ones traded in for slims so i would avoid them.....

The hard drive can easily be changed (it even tells you in the manual how to) and won't void your warranty...

You can download games & demos from the Playstation store onto the hard drive & use it as a PVR when connected to a PlayTV box so you could end up using quite a bit of storage but 120gb would last you a long time........
