Is PS3 really better than PS2?

DS2 keeps asking for a PS3 but I'm really not sure it is worth it. We have a PS2 and quite a few games, our tv is quite old.
We are not interested in any of the 'features' like blueray (whatever that is) and our tv is certainly not HD. We have a DVD player and hardly ever watch DVDs apart from on long car journeys.
From reading other threads on here it seems that they are not downward compatible (see I have learnt something).
He likes sports type games - football, golf, F1 that sort of thing and I don't allow shooting type games as I have a 7 year old.
Can somebody tell me if I'm missing something is it really worth trading up?
Many thanks

In your case probrably not.
WE have a PS3 and the graphics on the new games are fantastic, BUT, the gameplay is still about the same.
The MAIN advantage is the Bluray player and better graphics but if you dont have a HD tv then you wont see the benifit,“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”0 -
Agreed. Although I would point out that even with a normal TV the difference in visuals between the PS2 and PS3 are huge.0

Maybe getting an older one would be a good idea then. Any tips on how to get one that will be in good condition? I use ebay a lot but not for electricals. The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0

Game or Play have good preowned sections. Amazon might be worth a look as well.Dustykitten wrote: »Maybe getting an older one would be a good idea then. Any tips on how to get one that will be in good condition? I use ebay a lot but not for electricals.Back on MSE after a 5 year hiatus.

PS3 also has much better internet connectivity for online gaming and the Playstation Store, where you can download demos of some games for free before going out to buy them.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

I originally bought an xbox 360 back in 2005 but suffered the red ring of death so I decided to but a ps3 as they were down in price.
After spending £300 on the ps3 it lasted 10 months before getting a common sony disc read error. It was exchanged for free under warranty.
Im now back on a new xbox 360 based on a couple of things. The games always seem to be cheaper, especially online and Xbox Live is way better than anything sony has to offer... add this to the fact that its cheaper to buy means its a no brainer really.
I think Sony had so much success with the PS2 that people automatically assume the PS3 is the dogs B's when in reality its not...
Sony know this which is why theyve brought out the new slim version, a gimmick to try and drum up trade...
If you want fun for the family get a Wii...0 -

We have got a wii and DS3 loves it being younger. I like it too and the older boys do use it but like football games - is the xbox good for all games - I'd heard it was better for combat games (from a 13 year old) and that it was hard to get used to the different controls if you were used to PS2 but I guess you are doing ok?
Thanks to everybody for giving tips I really appreciate it.The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0 -

The xbox doesnt have a bluray drive and the PS3s games are coming along nicely (Id be interested to see if the xbox could cope with running Uncharted 2)
Its also a very good upscaling dvd player which is better than my old Pioneer (cost 1k!)
Add in internet, vidzone, built in wireless, iplayer etc etc
If you think its pap thats your call, but id HAVE to disagree with you:idea:0 -
That was my opinion of the PS3, so I didn't get one (we have a Wii, which is fun!).shandypants5 wrote: »In your case probrably not.

The PS3 is also a really ugly piece of kit.
I guess if you wanted bluray videos too then it might make sense.0 -

I think my "Fatty" PS3 looks loverly..:D (no really I think it looks smart, all glossy and black....)
I really do luv my PS3, it plays Bluray movies and upscales DVDs to look stunning on my HD tv.
I also agree that the games are getting better all the time, my kids have played little big planet pretty much nonstop for 10 months now.
But its only worth upgrading if you are going to appreciate the improvements over a PS2.“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”0
